#20 Kammy Delp- Offensive Guard
The 6-foot-3, 329-pound offensive guard enters the 2017 season as one of only five offensive lineman with starting experience. The redshirt junior has appeared in 12 career games with two starts to his name. Coach Andersen has recently said that Kammy Delp and Fred Lauina are in a battle for a starting guard spot. Gus Lavaka is all but guaranteed a starting guard spot as long as he’s healthy, but he was limited this past week during the Beavers camp in Bend.
Gus Lavaka did not play in the Beavers scrimmage on Friday night and Kammy Delp continues to gain valuable experience working with the first-team and even earned praise from Coach Andersen after a recent practice. Ultimately, I expect Gus Lavaka and Fred Lauina to grab the starting guard spots, but Kammy Delp will be the first interior lineman off the bench if anyone gets injured or the coaching staff doesn’t like what they see from a player on game day.
Recently Coach Andersen was quoted by the Gazette Times saying “You’d like to get eight or nine offensive linemen that you feel really good about, and hopefully we can get to that point”. It looks like Blake Brendel, Gus Lavaka, Sumner Houston, Fred Lauina and Trent Moore are in position to start on the offensive line, but in recent weeks Kammy Delp and Kel’i Montibon have been making their case for the right to start. Beyond those seven lineman it doesn’t seem like the coaching staff has a lot of confidence in their depth on the offensive line though.
It’s been mentioned before but if Oregon State wants to have a successful season they desperately need the offensive line to become a strength. Everyone knows they have the playmakers and running backs, but it all starts at the line of scrimmage. Only 20 days left until Beaver football is back!
