Oregon State Football: Most Valuable Player Countdown - #12 Andrzej Hughes-Murray

The versatile linebacker debuts on the countdown list

The college football season is just around the corner and Building the Dam’s countdown continues with No. 12.

#12: Andrzej Hughes-Murray - Linebacker

Andrzej enters his junior season after playing in all 12 games as a sophomore (4 starts). The 6-foot-2, 245-pound linebacker is an incredible athlete and will likely start the season at outside linebacker, but is versatile and strong enough to move to an inside linebacker role, if needed.

In his Oregon State career he has managed 45 tackles (29 solo) and was a Pac-12 All-Academic Honorable Mention a season ago. He is one of the Beavers most feared defensive players and opened up Saturday’s scrimmage with a sack on Jake Luton.

Recently, Bob Lundeberg of the Gazette Times outlined just how important these outside linebackers are going to be this season writing:

In Oregon State’s 3-4 scheme, outside linebackers are required to be multifaceted havoc wreakers.

Stopping the run, rushing the passer and understanding coverages are the prime skills defensive coordinator Tim Tibesar seeks in an outside linebacker. It’s a job fit for a select few.

“They have to be some of the major playmakers on our defense,” said Tibesar, who works with the OLBs while Trent Bray handles the interior linebackers. “There’s an obligation and a responsibility when you play that position in this defense that you have to be a playmaker.”

While a lot of play-making responsibilities are going to rest on the shoulder of Kee Whetzel, Hamilcar Rashed Jr. and Andrzej Hughes-Murray these young, athletic linebackers should be up for the challenge. Look for all three linebackers to have breakout seasons and produce for the Oregon State defense.
