Oregon State Football: Most Valuable Player Countdown - #17 Jay Irvine

Irvine is poised to have a big year for the Beavers

The college football season is just three weeks away! With the off-season quickly coming to an end, Building the Dam is unveiling their top 30 most valuable football players for the 2018 season. We’ll countdown by previewing one player at a time until it’s almost time for some Beaver football.

#17: Jay Irvine - Defensive Back

Coming into his junior season, #6 Jay Irvine has flashed potential, but has also battled injuries. As a red shirt freshman he played in the first four games of the season accumulating six tackles and earned his first start in a loss at Colorado. It was in that game against Colorado that Irvine suffered a season ending injury to his shoulder.

Last season he played in 7 games, but battled injuries throughout the season. For his career he’s accumulated 24 tackles, including one for loss and two pass deflections

At 6’1” and just under 200 pounds, Irvine has a size advantage over most defensive backs and he’s known to be a workout warrior. Last year, Bruce Feldman of Sports Illustrated wrote about Irvine in his Freaks List saying:

“The Florida native has excellent size for a corner at 6’1”, 201, but it’s his hops that really stands out. This off-season Irvine vertical jumped 43 inches. He also broad jumped 10’7” and squatted 500 pounds—2.5 times his body weight.”

The Beavers are hoping this is the year that Jay Irvine stays healthy and shows what he can do on the football field. With Xavier Crawford off to CMU, Oregon State will need their veterans like Dwayne Williams and Jay Irvine to lock-down opposing wide receivers.

Our countdown continues tomorrow with the 16th Most Valuable Player for the Beavers in 2018.
