Oregon St. plays the first of two games against Pacific of the West Coast Conference this afternoon as the Husker Classic continues in Tempe, AZ. The Beavers and Tigers will meed again tomorrow morning, at 11 AM (10 AM PST) to wrap up their extended weekend.
The Beavers backed up their opening day come from behind 4-3 win over the 'Zags with yesterday's 15-7 rout of the Huskers, in which the lead was 15-2 after the top of the 8th inning, and Oregon St. coach Pat Casey began substituting freely.
The Beavers could be looking for the #1 ranking in the country, after Washington St. took down #1 ranked Fullerton St. 9-7 yesterday. The Cougs needed 2 extra innings to do it, but scored a huge win for the Pac-12 conference, and did it on the Titans' own field.
Oregon St. will send senior RHP Scott Schultz to the mound first today. It will be Schultz's 4th career start.
Pacific will counter with sophomore RHP Jake Jenkins. Jenkins appeared in 14 games for the Tigers last season, starting 9 of them. It was a rough freshman campaign for Jenkins, who went 1-9, with an ERA of 6.66, for a Tiger team that went 15-39, and 7-20 in the WCC.
Oregon St. has holds a 12-7 edge all-time against Pacific. The last time the Beavers and Tigers met was in San Diego in the 2012 pre-season, a game the Beavers won 12-7.
Jeff Hendrix, who carried the Beavers to the opening day win, is back in the lineup today, after taking yesterday off to let the hand he was hit on with a pitch, and also got stepped on, heal. Hendrix will lead off and play center.
