After Friday’s showing that resulted in a 6-0 loss for Oregon State, Beaver fans were hoping that the loss would be able to be chalked up to home opener jitters. Based on Saturday’s game, however, it doesn’t look like that’s the case.
The UCSB Gauchos took Saturday’s game by a score of 4-0 despite the Beavers having six hits to UCSB’s five. It didn’t help that the Beavs committed three errors while the Gauchos committed none.
UCSB’s Zachary Torra was the winning pitcher while Connor Dand earned his second save of the season.
For the Beavers, Jake Pfennigs started on the mound and received his second loss of the season, bringing his record to 2-2. Pfennigs pitched for six innings allowing three hits and a run, which was earned. He also had four strikeouts and hit two batters.

UCSB scored their first run in the third inning with an RBI triple off the bat of McClain O’Connor against Pfennigs. They added another run in the eighth with an RBI double by Cole Cummings. The Gauchos’ final two runs came in the ninth as icing on their cake (which I hope tasted like rum raisin) with a two RBI single by Nic Vogt.
With one game left in the series, the Beavs will try to salvage some pride on Sunday afternoon. While we all expected some hiccups in the first year of Mitch Canham, it’s clear the Beavs need to find some answers on both offense and defense, and they need to do it quickly.
