For awhile, it looked like the Beavers were in trouble. They couldn’t hit any shots in the first, going 1-12 from the field, with a Destiny Slocum layup and a pair of Mikayla Pivec free throws being the only points in the quarter. The defense managed to control BYU, but with the team down 11-4 headed into the second, it looked like the team could suffer their first loss of the season.
Then they outscored the Cougars 61-22 over the rest of the game. The absolute dominance over the last three quarters got the Beavers to 11-0 on the season, the team’s best ever start. It was an incredible performance both offensively and defensively; Oregon State shot 43% from the field despite the terrible first quarter while holding BYU to a 21% shot percentage.
Destiny Slocum once again led the Beavers in scoring, with 18 points, 3 rebounds and an assist. Kat Tudor had her best game since coming back from last season’s knee injury, with 15 points, and 2 rebounds. Tudor was 4 for 7 on three point shots, hitting three in a row in the fourth quarter. Mikayla Pivec was the Beavers’ final double digit scorer, with 13 points, 9 rebounds and 3 assists.
It was a quiet night for the Beavers new bigs, with Taylor Jones scoring 6 and Kennedy Brown scoring 2. The two did help the Beavers win the rebounding battle, with Jones grabbing 7 and Brown 8. Brown also had 3 blocks, while Jones had 2.
The Beavers will return to Corvallis next for their final non-conference game of the season. They’ll take on CSU Bakersfield a week from Sunday, on December 29th, at 12:00 PM PT.
