Oregon State had little trouble opening their series against Arizona State with a 6-2 victory on Friday night. Seven hits to ASU’s six put them in a good spot to get the job done, along with ASU committing two errors.

It also helped that starting pitcher Luke Heimlich reached his third straight game with double-digit strikeouts with 11 in this one.

The Beavs took an early lead in the third inning off of a fantastic bunt by Cadyn Grenier, which scored Michael Gretler. Adley Rutschman added one more in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single through the left side.

In the eighth, Oregon State gave themselves a bigger cushion with a four-run inning. Jack Anderson reached on a fielder’s choice but was able to turn it into a double on a throwing error by the pitcher. That error also gave two runners enough time to score. A Michael Gretler double scored two more a few batters later.

ASU got two back in T9 with a solo homer by Spencer Torkelson and an RBI single by dh Taylor Lane. The Beavs would walk away with the win though on a somewhat gloomy night in Corvallis.

Luke Heimlich’s record improves to 10-1 on the year with the win. As we mentioned, 11 strikeouts in this one make three straight games with double-digit strikeouts for him. He almost went the whole game pitching 8.2 innings while allowing 5 hits and two runs, both earned. Dylan Pearce pitched the final 0.1 innings allowing one hit.

That win puts OSU at 31-6 this year and puts them in place to win the series Saturday afternoon at 3:05 PM PT.
