- “Oregon State athletic director Scott Barnes, head football coach Jonathan Smith and head men’s basketball coach Wayne Tinkle have all agreed to donate seven percent of their annual salaries over the next year back to the athletic department”, according to the Gazette-Times. The generous act from the athletic executive and coaches will help to relieve the Beavers of deeper financial burdens during the time of the coronavirus pandemic.
- Another coronavirus related piece, former Oregon State women’s basketball star Sydney Wiese was the first WNBA player to test positive for the coronavirus and she shared her ordeal with the illness to Mark Medina of USA Today. Wiese says that if her most recent tests for antibodies are favorable, that she has plans to donate her blood plasma in the very near-future for research purposes to help combat the disease.
- One more strong piece from the Gazette-Times, former Beavers hardwood icon Joe Burton is continuing to teach about his Native American background and heritage, using basketball as the platform to spread his message. Burton is most notably remembered as a fan favorite for Oregon State, who was also the first Native American player to compete on basketball scholarship in the (then) Pac-10.
- The recent trade of Oregon State alumnus Brandin Cooks to the Houston Texas was a major point in the NFL’s always wild and chaotic off-season. Since then, the good folks over at Battle Red Blog broke out the film projector and cleared the magnets off the refrigerator door, so they could do a thorough film breakdown of what type of game-changing ability that Cooks will bring to the Texans offense.
- And finally, John Canzano over at the Oregonian got chatty on his podcast with head women’s basketball coach Scott Rueck, discussing everything from the coronavirus pandemic, Destiny Slocum’s recent transfer out of the program and even his thoughts on Tom Brady leaving New England. If you stopped reading at Canzano, I can’t blame you, but you should listen to some good thoughts from Rueck.
