The Beavers’ first game in the WNIT got the regular season started right, with the team taking control in the second quarter on the way to an 86-57 win over UC Irvine. The Beavers start the season at 1-0 and will take on Pacific in the second round of the tournament.

After going back and forth for the first couple minutes of the game, a Mikayla Pivec three pointer gave the Beavers a lead they would never relinquish. UC Irvine hung around for a bit, trimming the lead to two at one point, but the Beavers offense proved too overwhelming, with Destiny Slocum and Aleah Goodman dominating the perimeter, Taylor Jones taking control of the post, and Mikayla Pivec scoring from pretty much everywhere.
Pivec was once again just shy of a triple double, with 25 points, 12 rebounds and 8 assists. Aleah Goodman also notched a double a double, with 12 points and 10 assists. All 12 of her points were on three point shots; she was 4 for 8 from behind the arc.
The win was also a showcase for freshman Taylor Jones, who had perhaps the best game of any Beaver freshman in history. Jones finished the night with 20 points, all in the first half, and 10 rebounds. That’s a double double in her first official game as a Beaver. Her fellow freshman forward, Kennedy Brown, also had a pretty good debut, with 6 points and 9 rebounds on the night.
So far, the Beavers front court of the future looks very strong.
Oregon State will be back in action tomorrow, taking on Pacific in the second round of the WNIT. Tipoff will be at 7:00 PM PST, so get down to Gill and support the team if you can!
