- After starting 11 games last season on the defensive line, Oregon State football’s Sumner Houston switched over to the center position for the 2017 season, to help rebuild an offensive line parting with Sean Harlow, Dustin Stanton and Gavin Andrews. On Monday, Houston’s vast potential at the position, helped him earn on a spot on the Rimington Trophy watch list, an award given each season to the best center in the country. Houston is one of five players from the Pac-12 on the list and the eighth Beaver to ever make the award’s watch list. A full list of the 63 players on the watch list can be found here.
- Speaking of awards, Oregon State pitcher Jake Thompson is already on the College Baseball Hall of Fame's Pitcher of the Year Award Watch List and a semi-finalist for the Dick Howser Trophy, but more recently, the Beavers flamethrower was named Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season. After a dominant complete game effort against Washington State, Thompson is hitting his stride at the right time, with the NCAA Tournament looming right around the corner.
- Head women’s basketball coach Scott Rueck is continuing to set the tone on the recruiting trail and less than a week after adding Australian guard Jasmine Simmons to the 2018 class, the Beavers have also earned a commitment from 6’ 7” prospect Patricia Morris, out of Duarte High School in California. Morris joins the aforementioned Simmons, 6’ 9” five-star center Andrea Aquino and in-state guard Katie Mayhue are the four members of Oregon State’s 2018 haul so far.
- Some good news for former Oregon State and current Los Angeles Rams quarterback Sean Mannion has surfaced over the last few days, as multiple outlets are beginning to report that Rams head coach Sean McVay will have a short regular season leash with starter Jared Goff and could turn to the former Beavers gunslinger if things go poorly. Goff’s potential struggles could be the break that Mannion needs to prove his worth, as he enters the third year of his NFL career with only 13 attempted passes under his belt.
- On Monday, the Beavers basketball program received a unique commitment from a 6’ 8” forward out of Pennsylvania, as athletic director Scott Barnes’ son Isaac committed to continue his academic and athletic career in Corvallis. Barns joins UMASS grad transfer Seth Berger and his fellow 2017 commits in Ethan Thompson, Alfred Hollins, Zach Reichle and Xavier Smith as the newest members to the Beavers basketball program.
