On Wednesday, the Atlanta Tip-Off Club announced the names of the 50 players who will be placed on the “Naismith Trophy Watch-List”, an accolade given at the end of each season to the best player in all of women’s college basketball. And just as now-WNBA guard Sydney Wiese scooped up countless awards for the Beavers a season ago, the lineage of Oregon State talent being considered for these prestigious accolades seems to be continuing under head coach Scott Rueck.
For the 2017-2018 edition of the award, Oregon State’s Marie Gulich has been named to the trophy watch-list, after helping the Beavers to a 3-2 start, which has included hard-fought losses to national powerhouses Notre Dame and Duke. The 6’ 5” center, who was an all-league selection a season ago, has become the focal point of an Oregon State roster working a new wave of talent through the team’s first five games
On the year, Gulich is currently averaging 15.2 points, 8 rebounds and 4.4 blocks per game.
The Naismith Trophy Watch-List will be narrowed down to just thirty players on Monday, February 12th, before a final winner of the award is determined at the end of the season. Other players from the Pac-12 to make the watch-list, include Kristine Anigwe (California), Monique Billings (UCLA), Jordin Canada (UCLA), Ruthy Hebard (Oregon), Sabrina Ionescu (Oregon) and Brittany McPhee (Stanford).
