According to the Oregonian’s John Canzano Oregon State is set to hire former QB Jonathan Smith
BREAKING: I’m told Oregon State and Jonathan Smith have agreed on a deal that makes him the next Beavers' football coach, per sources close to Smith. I expect a formal announcement later today.
— John Canzano (@johncanzanobft) November 29, 2017
Smith who played at Oregon State under Mike Riley and Dennis Erickson, leading the Beavs to their best season in modern history, has spent the past 6 years coaching QB’s for Chris Peterson including the last 4 as his offensive coordinator. Before joining Chris Peterson at Boise State in 2012, Smith spent time as a grad assistant at Oregon State, as the QB coach at Idaho and as the offensive coordinator for Montana. Smith’s name was recently linked to Dennis Erickson’s candidacy in a scenario that would see Smith being name ‘coach in waiting’.
It will be interesting to see how Smith fills out his staff and how much he will rely upon his connections to OSU alums and former Beaver coaches. The staff will likely need to be filled out soon as Smith will wanna hit the recruiting trail hard over the next several weeks.
Expect more on Smith and his staff from us in the coming days.
