The Beavers played Washington St. tonight in Pullman Washington. They came into this game 11-5 better then 9-7 last year. They were 1-3 on the road and tied for 6th in the Pac-12 with their rival the Oregon Ducks. Washington St comes in at 9-7 but are 3-1 in Pac-12 play and are ranked 4th.
Gary Payton ll comes into the game leading the Beavers with 11.8 pts and 8.2 Rebounds. The Beavers pulled off a great upset against then 7th Arizona 58-56, the Bearcats would fall to 10th. Thursday they would suffer a let down against Washington, falling 43-56.
The Beavers opened the game strong going on a 6-0 run, starting with a dunk from Langston Morris-Walker, a block from Olaf Schaftenaar, and on the opposite side of the ball an akward one hand shot. Before being answered by the Cougars Brett Boese who hit a deep two that would finally put the Cougars on the board. Gary Payton ll used two great screens to hit a 3. Boese would hit a 3 to answer back for the Cougars making the score 9-5. Schaftenaar would answer back with a three of his own. Josh Hawkinson would finally be the second Cougar to score.
Gary Payton ll would score on an amazing drive finishing with a layup, extending the lead to 17-7. Before being answered back by Jordan Raylee. Who would get a chance for a three point play, he would make the free throw 17-10. The Cougs would go on a five point run before Gary Payton ll would stop it with a two of his own. Jarmal Reid would fight for a hard rebound with two Cougars, then on the other side hit a two to extend the lead to 21-12.
The Cougars are having trouble hitting shots, they're just hitting bricks, it's 6:27 in the first half and they are at 29% on field goals. Payton had an amazing block on the Cougars Que Johnson denying him the dunk. Thats going on sportscenter. The Cougars haven't scored for almost 5 minutes, as the Beavers are pulling away making shots and getting rebounds.
Boese hits another three having 8 of the Cougars 15 points. Cutting the lead to 21-15, the Beavers would go on a drought of their own going scoreless for 4 minutes. There are hardly any free throws in the first half. The Cougars are struggling having scored 57 in the first half against Oregon thursday, are held to 16 tonight. Beavers lead at halftime 25-16.
The Beavers open the second half much like the opening minutes of the game going on a 8-0 run extending the lead to 33-16. The Cougars would finally answer back as Devonte Lacy would come alive in the second half, as he would score 5 points back to back. After being fouled at the three point line going 3-3. He would later continue to lead the charge hitting a 3 to pull within 8, 38-30. Helping the Cougars go on a 12-3 run to get some offense going in the second half.
The Beavers would rely heavily on Langston Morris-Walker in the second half. He would hit a 3 extending the lead to 45-34. The Cougars would again cut the lead to 8 with the Cougars Josh Hawkinson going 2-2 at the line 49-41. Gary Payton ll had another amazing lay up firing up the Beavers. Lacey would respond back driving hard to the basket trying to get the Cougars going.
The Cougars battled back to 8 a couple more times, but couldn't get over the hump as time was running out, They would fall to fouling the Beavers. As Langston Morris Walker would go 8-8 from the line finishing with the Beavers last 8 points. The final score 62-47 for a Beavers win, improving their record to 12-5. In Pac 12 play improved to 3-2 and haven't done that since the 92 to 93 season.
The Beavers would dominate in the paint doubling the Cougars, 24 points to the Cougars 12. Langston Morris-Walker finished with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Having a lot better game then their loss at Washington where Walker and Payton had 4 points apiece. Gary Payton ll would finished with 13 points, 13 rebounds, 5 steals, 2 ast, and 1 block. Payton continues to be player that does everything for the Beavers. Devonte Lacy lead the Cougars with 16 points.
The Beavers host the UCLA Bruins Thursday night at 6 pm at the Gill Coliseum in Corvallis Oregon.
