Game Notes / Arizona St. Game Notes
Oregon St. and Arizona St. continue their Pac-12 weekend series with a sunny Saturday afternoon game at Goss Stadium.
The Beavers took care of the Sun Devils last night, with Ben Wetzler going a solid 7 innings, with Scott Schultz following up with 2 solid innings of closer work to spin a shutout, while Gabe Clark backed up a Dylan Davis RBI sacrifice with a 2 RBI single to produce a 3 run 5th inning that did most of the offensive damage that led to the 4-0 win.
Coupled with Washington St.'s 2-0 win over UCLA, it elevated Oregon St. to sole possession of first place in the Pac-12.
The Cougs, Washington, who edged Arizona 8-7 last night, in,the 'Cats' first ever loss at Husky Ballpark, Oregon, a 1-0 winner over Utah, and the Bruins, are all right on the Beavers' heels however.
Oregon St. will send sophomore RHP Andrew Moore (2-1, 1.01 ERA) out to try to win the series, and extend their 11 game winning streak.
Arizona St. will counter with sophomore LHP Ryan Kellogg (1-2, 4.18 ERA). As both his w-l record and ERA indicates, Kellogg has had some rough moments this season. But Beaver fans will recall last season, when, in a very similar situation, after Matt Boyd had 1-hit the Sun Devils on Friday night in a 5-0 win, Kellogg threw a no-hitter complete game 4-0 shutout that was a pair of errors away from a perfect game at the Beavers.
It was the only time anyone beat Moore all last year until the season ending CWS semifinal loss to Mississippi St. No doubt Andrew would like to square up the ledger for that one.
There will also be a twinge of sadness in the stadium, though, as Beth Ray, wife of Oregon St. President Ed Ray, passed away last evening, after an extended battle with cancer. Perhaps a Beaver win in her memory is in the offing?
Head coach Pat Casey has stayed with the same batting order, but made a key defensive move, swapping Kavin Keyes and Jerad Casper between first and third base, after Casper committed a couple of errors last night.
Here's today's Oregon St. lineup:
SS - Trever Morrison
2B - Andy Peterson
LF - Michael Conforto
RF - Dylan Davis
3B - Kavin Keyes
DH - Gabe Clark
1B - Jerad Casper
C - Logan Ice
CF - Nick Rulli
P - Andrew Moore
