Oregon State Bounces Back With 11-1 Clobbering of Michigan

After a tough loss against Arkansas this is exactly the kind of win the Beavers needed.

After a close lost against Arkansas, one of the nation’s top teams, on Friday night, the Oregon State baseball team got a nice bounce back win with an 11-1 mauling of the Michigan Wolverines. The win improves the Beavers record to 6-1.

The Wolverines drew first blood Saturday afternoon, when a solo home run from Jonathan Kim in the top of the second. That homer would be the only thing that would go well for Michigan today, as from that point on it straight Beaver domination.

A Jacob Krieg single scored the Beavers first run of the day in the bottom of the second, and then a Jabin Trosky double scored two more for a 3-1 Beaver lead. A Gavin Turley homer in the bottom of the third gave the Beavs 2 more runs.

That was Oregon State’s only homer today. While one home run is kind of low for this season’s Beaver squad, the team made up for it with a blistering offensive pace. 3 runs in the bottom of the fifth, thanks to a pair of singles from Turley and Dallas Macias and a fielder’s choice. Another three runs in the bottom of the sixth, with a two run Mason Guerra single and a bases loaded walk.

While all this was happening, Beaver pitching absolutely stymied Michigan’s batters. Other than the solo home run in the second, starter Jacob Kmatz only gave up two more hits while striking out 10 Wolverines and walking none. Tyler Mejia came to the mound in relief in the sixth inning, and pitched for 1.2 innings while allowing only one hit.

After the top of the seventh with the score 11-1, the game was called due to the 10 run mercy rule.

The Beavers will be back in action tomorrow, finishing up their trip to Arlington with a game against Oklahoma State. First pitch is set for 3:00 PM PT.
