Jade Carey To Compete In Gymnastics All Around Finals

The future Oregon State gymnast will get her chance after Simone Biles’s withdrawal.

After the first round of Olympic Gymnastics last weekend, future Oregon State gymnast Jade Carey qualified for finals on two apparatuses, floor exercises and vault. Carey just missed out on performing in the all around final; each nation is only allowed two athletes in the all around so Carey, despite finishing in ninth place, was on the outside of the cut.

Things changed late Tuesday night, when Simone Biles decided to withdraw from competition to focus on health concerns. Biles finished first overall in the all around, so her departure from the event will dramatically shake things up. Biles may still compete in the individual events next week if she is feeling healthy enough.

Carey now has three chances to medal in Tokyo. While the competition in the all around is going to be fierce, Carey should also be a strong contender in the single apparatus events. She finished second on the vault, only behind Biles, and third in floor exercises, behind Biles and Italy’s Vanessa Ferrari. Carey will be competing alongside Sunisa Lee for Team USA in the all around. The All Around Finals are scheduled for Thursday, July 29th at 3:50 AM Pacific Time.
