The Oregon State Beavers and Stanford Cardinal battled for nine innings in a close fought pitchers duel, but it was the squad from Palo Alto who got the win, pulling off a 1-0 victory in the series opener. The loss drops OSU to 33-21 overall, and 15-13 in the Pac-12 Conference.

The one run in the game came in the bottom of the sixth, when Stanford’s Brock Jones hit a solo home run. Other than that, it was a scoreless affair. Oregon State starter Kevin Abel through a complete 8.0 innings, allowing four hits and the one run, against seven strikeouts. The loss drops him to 3-4 on the season.

Stanford’s Brendan Beck got the win, also pitching a complete game during which he only allowed three hits and struck out 10. Those three hits came from Beavers Wade Meckler, Troy Claunch and Greg Fuchs. That keeps Claunch’s hit streak alive at 15 games, though it is a pyrrhic victory.

Game 2 between the two teams is set for tomorrow at 6:00 PM PT. The game will be aired by the Pac-12 Networks.
