Oregon State Baseball: Beavers Mimic Baylor, Blow Away Gonzaga

It has not been a great night to be a fan of the Bulldogs.

Oregon State got back to winning Monday night, starting off a mid week series against Gonzaga with a big 11-3 win. Andy Armstrong had a huge night, leading the team with 6 RBIs, and reliever Brock Townsend picked up his second win of the season. The Beavers improve to 21-6 this season.

Oregon State started scoring early, with a Jacob Melton fly out in the bottom of the first scoring Jake Dukart for the Beavers first run of the night. An Andy Armstrong singlethe next at bat scored Ryan Ober, giving Oregon State a 2-0 lead after the first inning. It wouldn’t take long for Gonzaga to respond.

In the top of the second, a single, a hit by pitch and a walk loaded the bases for the Bulldogs. Then, a passed ball on a third strike allowed Gonzaga batter Ryan Sullivan to reach base and advanced all runners, giving the Zags their first run. A single later in the inning scored two more, giving Gonzaga a 3-2 lead. The Beavers managed to tie things up in the bottom of the frame, with a passed ball on a Jake Dukart walk scoring one run.

OSU broke the tie the next inning, with an Andy Armstrong foul ball scoring Ryan Ober to give them a 4-3 lead. The fourth inning wasn’t particularly noteworthy for either team, except for the top of the inning, when the Oregon State defense turned this ridiculous play.

A Preston Jones double in the bottom of the fifth added another run to the Beaver side, and an Andy Armstrong double in the bottom of the sixth added two more. A Kyler McMahan triple capped things off in the sixth, adding another two runs. A single from Andy Armstrong in the bottom of the seventh added one final run for the Beavers, solidifying an 11-3 victory.

Game 2 between Oregon State and Gonzaga will kick off at 5:35 PM PT tomorrow, with a stream broadcasting on pac-12.com.
