After a Friday opener that saw the Oregon State Beavers put up a strong performance against New Mexico with an 11-4 victory, Mitch Canham’s squad didn’t have the same fortune on Saturday.
The Gonzaga Bulldogs earned the 10-4 win against the Beavs on the second day of the Sanderson Ford College Baseball Classic in Surprise, Arizona. Alec Gomez was the winning pitcher for the Zags while the loss went to OSU’s Jake Mulholland.
Mulholland started the game on the mound for Oregon State and showed some unfortunate rust. Gonzaga had a two run lead by the end of the first inning. The Zags scored five more runs in the fifth, which created a hole that OSU never climbed out of. In 3.2 innings on the mound, Mulholland gave up eight hits, seven runs, and two walks with just one strikeout.

In all, Gonzaga finished with 17 hits and committed only one error. The Beavs had nine hits and committed no errors.
Just because the Beavers were offensively outpaced in this one doesn’t mean they didn’t turn in a few highlights. The defense turned in three double plays and Joe Casey showed his mobility with this diving catch.
Joe Casey, what a catch in left! @FloBaseball

The offense had a few good moments as well, particularly in the fifth inning, including a perfect bunt from Kyler McMahan and a three-run homer by Troy Claunch. Claunch homered in yesterday’s win as well.
Kyler McMahan meant to do this.

Gonzaga outfielder Ryan Sullivan and first baseman Gabriel Hughes led the way offensively with four hits each. The Beavs’ attack was led by Kyler McMahan with three hits.
Well, OSU’s chance at an undefeated season is out the window. The good news is, there’s plenty more baseball to be played for the nation’s #25 team.
The Beavers continue their stint in Arizona tomorrow with a rematch against the Zags at Noon PST and wrap it up with a game against BYU on Monday at 1 PST.
