Oregon State Men’s Basketball team looks like it has no plan for the remainder of their season, as they seemed completely overmatched on home court against USC. USC jumped out to an early lead an Oregon State never seemed able to challenge them. Oregon State falls to 12-8 (2-6) while USC rises to 16-4 (5-2).
USC built an early lead off of three pointers from Nick Rakocevic and Jonah Matthews, and layups from Ethan Anderson. The Beavers had trouble finding open shots early, with most of their points coming off of turnovers and free throws. USC got a 13-0 run going around the 10 minute mark to take a 30-8 lead, and it looked like the Beavers were done early.
Around that point though, the Beavers finally started finding some shots. Ethan Thompson and Tres Tinkle hit a pair of threes, and Roman Silva found some success in the paint. A three from Tinkle with 1:47 to go got the Trojan lead down to 11, and then a Kylor Kelley layup with a +1 foul shot got it back into single digits before the half ended, withh OSU down 36-28.
It looked like momentum had shifted the Beavers way, but USC seemed energized coming out of the break. The team’s traded shots back and forth, until an Antoine Vernon three got the Trojan lead down to 6, and USC elected to take a timeout. After that break, USC re-established control of the game, with their offense exploding over the final 10 minutes. The Beavers shooting woes returned, with only Tres Tinkle putting in an effort. OSU limped through the final 10 minutes of the game, scoring only 15 compared to USC’s 30. The Trojans coasted to an easy 75-55 win.
Tres Tinkle led the way for the Beavers with 21 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists. Kylor Kelley and Ethan Thompson both scored 10, with Thompson added 5 rebounds and 3 assists, and Kelley contributing another 4 rebounds.
The Beavers will be on the road next weekend, traveling to Northern California to take on Stanford on Thursday, January 30th, and Cal on Saturday, February 1st. Check back with Building the Dam for previews.
