After opening Pac-12 play on a high note over the weekend, the Beavers tried to keep the momentum going on Tuesday in Hillsboro against Portland. The night...could have gone better. Portland won the game 5-1 and outhit the Beavs 8-3. The Pilots committed the only error on the night.

Portland got on the board right away when the Pilots loaded the bases and Jake Pfennigs hit UP’s Matt Kelly with a pitch, driving in a run. The Pilots followed that up with a two-RBI single in that frame from Hunter Montgomery.

OSU finally scored in the fourth inning with Matthew Gretler’s first home run in an OSU uniform.

Portland added one more with an RBI single from Gabe Skoro in the bottom of the seventh.

It was a rough first career start for freshman Jake Pfennigs. He went just 1.2 innings allowing three hits and four earned runs with three walks and three strikeouts. He also hit two batters.

The Beavs continue the season on Friday at 7 PM PT in Seattle when they begin a three game series against Washington. We’ll preview that series later in the week.
