What started as a close Pac-12 battle turned into another Oregon State blowout, as the Beavers took down Arizona 86-64. Destiny Slocum once again dominated a Beaver victory, with great shooting from all over the court, including 4 three pointers. The Beavers are now 5-0 in the Pac-12, and 15-2 overall.
Things started off great for Oregon State, with an impressive sequence of threes building a good lead. Destiny Slocum, Mikayla Pivec, Taya Corosdale and Aleah Goodman all nailed shots from behind the arc to help build a solid OSU lead. The Wildcats weren’t ready to go to sleep, and Cate Reese and Dominique McBride doing everything they could to keep Arizona in the game. They cut down the Oregon State lead, ending the first quarter only down by one, 19-18.
Arizona managed to turn that into a lead in the second quarter, but not for long. The Wildcats built a three point lead, which Taya Corosdale immediately wiped out with a fantastic three point shot. The Beavers and Wildcats then swapped leads, before Oregon State went on a 10-2 run to close the half, and take a 37-28 lead into the locker room.
Arizona kept pace with Oregon State in the third quarter, only letting the led grow to 11, but in the fourth quarter the Beavers began to blow things out. Destiny Slocum hit back to back TO BACK threes to put the game away. Arizona tried to climb back into things, and clamped down on Slocum’s scoring ability, but the rest of the team more than made up for it. Mikayla Pivec, Jo Grymek and Katie McWilliams kept the scoring rolling, and Aleah Goodman hit a three to close things out with 24 seconds to go. Beavers win 86-64.
Destiny Slocum was once again the star of the show, with 24 points, 3 assists and 2 rebounds. While she wasn’t super efficient from behind the arc, going 4 for 11, those 3 threes to start the fourth quarter were an absolute dagger in the heart to Arizona. It’s rare you see someone absolutely shut the door on a game in that fashion.
Taya Corosdale and Mikayla Pivec added another 14 points each. They were also both dynamite rebounders, Pivec grabbing 11 and Corosdale grabbing 9. Corosdale also added 4 assists, and Pivec 3. Katie McWilliams also had a standout game; 11 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 assists.
The Beavers will take on the Arizona State Sun Devils on Sunday, January 20th, at 2:00 PM PST. Check back with Building the Dam for a preview.
