Back in the Sattel: Oregon State vs Arizona State

Get the keys to a Beaver victory as they head south the face the Sun Devils.

The Oregon State Beavers come into Arizona State after a disappointing loss to say the least. There is not much to build off of coming into this week, leaving the coordinators in an uphill battle. If the Beavers hope to come out with a win in this game, this is what they will have to do.

Key 1: Find an identity on offense

The Beavers so far have not done anything exceptional other than running the ball against Southern Utah. Their offense seems to be very dull and all over the place. They need to set what they are good at and stick to their guns in a game. Running is methodical and often takes some wearing down to be successful, but could be worth it. This will also help Blount gain more comfort in the pocket and open up the passing game. With Luton listed as doubtful for this week, it is important for Blount to keep gaining confidence and get comfortable with this offense.

Key 2: Take pride on defense

Having possibly the worst team in the Pac-12 this year come into Reser and set a rushing record is not good. The Beavers defense looked helpless at time as they ran around the field hoping to stop the run. Arizona had their way in Reser. There’s this guy named N’Keal Harry on ASU who is probably going to be a first round WR. He has the ability to make it a very long day for Oregon State. If the Beavers don’t take pride and learn to hit back on defense then it will be another game that’s over early.

Key 3: Don’t repeat last year

Last year the Beavers started losing and after the blowout at the hands of Colorado State and the narrow victory against PSU the Beavers had no motivation for the season. Granted the head coach walked out on them last year, the Beavers seemed to lack any will to play football or win games. It was common to see them give up one touchdown and lose all momentum and just get beat around the field as they counted down the minutes until the season was over. Coach Smith has to keep the team morale high to prevent this if he wants any hope to win another game this season.

Don’t give up just yet on this Beavers team, they have talent returning and if they hit their stride have the talent to compete in the Pac-12. It will take some good play calling and players fighting for every victory but the Beavers are improving. This week may not be that Pac-12 win but the goal this season is improvement from last year.
