In mid-April, Dallas Wings’ forward Ruth Hamblin decided to take a season off from the WNBA to focus on making the Canadian National Team roster. At the time, the decision seemed a risky one for the team’s 2016 second-round draft pick, who was coming off a rookie campaign in which she averaged just 1.1 points and 1.5 rebounds per game. However, the Oregon State product seemed unfazed by her decision.

Three months later, Hamblin’s risky call was suddenly the right move all along.

Hamblin, along with former Oregon State teammate Jamie Scott (Weisner), were both selected to the twelve-player roster who will compete for Team Canada in the upcoming 2017 FIBA Women’s AmeriCup. The Canadians, who are the reigning champions of the event, sport a roster that will center around 2015 AmeriCup Most Valuable Player Kia Nurse (UCONN).

The event, which will take place from August 6th to 13th in Buenos Aires, Argentina, will feature Team Canada starting off the competition in “Group B”, where they’ll have to first navigate through the likes of Cuba, Mexico, Paraguay and Puerto Rico. While the goal of Team Canada will be another championship, it’s important to remember that the top three teams overall at the 2017 FIBA Women’s AmeriCup will secure a bid to the 2018 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup.

Hamblin has represented Canada in the past, both at the 2012 FIBA Americas Women’s U-18 Champions and for the senior national team in exhibitions during 2013 and 2014. However, this will be the 6’ 6” forward’s first chance to help her country secure a trip to the World Cup next year. As for Scott, she’s been noted in the team’s training camp as one of the “up-and-coming players” who are poised for a big impact.
