Wednesday afternoon, USA Baseball announced the forty players being considered for the Golden Spikes Award. For the college baseball newbies, it’s more or less the Heisman of NCAA baseball. Included on that list were Beavs’ pitcher Luke Heimlich and shortstop Nick Madrigal.
Heimlich is currently 5th in the nation in ERA (0.77) with 63 strikeouts on the year and ranks 9th in the nation hits allowed Per nine innings with 4.91. Madrigal is batting .392 with 11 doubles, one triple, three homers and 19 RBIs.
Other teams with two players named to the list include North Carolina, Texas, LSU, Virginia, and Auburn. The Pac-12 has five players total on the list.
Of players named to the list, Oregon State has defeated one (JJ Matijevic of Arizona) and has one remaining on the schedule. That matchup will be against Oregon Ducks pitcher David Peterson, on May 11th or 12th, depending on what they do with their rotation between now and then.
