Oregon State kept their playoff hopes alive today, with a 3-0 over the UCLA Bruins at home. The Beavers found another star to step up in a must win game in the final series of the season. This time pitcher Bryce Fehmel pitched the whole game, in only his second start, scattering five hits and holding the Bruins scoreless. The freshman who has been a reliable presence on the mound improved his record to 10-1, and became the first Pac-12 pitcher to reach 10 wins this season.
The game looked to be another close one as both teams were held scoreless in the first four innings, but again the Bruins would blink first. A Trever Morrison sacrifice bunt scored Jack Anderson in the bottom of the fifth. The trend would continue as the Beavers added a run in the sixth a home run from Nick Madrigal and seventh a single from Cadyn Grenier to give them 3-0 lead they used to win the game. UCLA has now been shut out for 2 full games.
With the win the Beavers improved to 34-19 overall and finally a winning record in Pac-12 play at 15-14. Oregon State who currently sits at fifth in the Pac-12 looks to have a chance now with a second straight win, a series sweep would help their case to make the college baseball playoffs. The series concludes Sunday at 11am.
