Oregon State downs Kent State 69-50, Snaps 5 Game Losing Streak

Despite a Kent State offensive rebounding clinic, the Beavers cruised to victory.

NCAA Basketball: Oregon State at Mississippi State Spruce Derden-USA TODAY Sports

In one of the wackier basketball games of the season, Oregon State utilized an 18-0 run in the second half to pull away from Kent State, in Gill Coliseum. Kendal Manuel led the way with 17 points. Kent State pulled down a NCAA season-high 34 offensive rebounds on the night.

First Half

The Beavers shot surprisingly well in the first half and found themselves with a 27-26 advantage headed into halftime. Oregon State could not secure a rebound if their lives depended on it though. They gave up 20 offensive rebounds in the first half. 20 OFFENSIVE REBOUNDS!! Kent State went 0-12 from downtown in the first half, which lead to a number of long rebounds. But grabbing 20 offensive rebounds in the first twenty minutes of game time is ridiculous. Kent State also made just two of their eight free throws in the first half. Both teams had to be feeling embarrassed (for different reasons) and I’m sure both coaches were livid in the locker rooms during the break.

Second Half

In the second half the trends continued from the first half. Kent State went 0-for-15 on three-pointers, before hitting a triple to tie the game up. After a back and forth affair, Oregon State did the impossible and went on an 18-0 run! Shots were falling and the defense clamped down. The Beavers even started pulling down the occasional defensive rebound. Also, the turnover bug that has plagued Oregon State this season disappeared down the stretch. Kent State still managed to grab an insane amount of offensive rebounds (34), but shooting 1-for-24 from three-point land and 27.6% from the field will give you plenty of opportunities for offensive rebounds. Also, Kent State shot just 38.9% from the charity stripe. It was a nightmarish game for Kent State fans in terms of shooting the ball.

Game Notes:

  • Oregon State ended with 24 turnovers (not good). But, they had zero over the last 9 minutes or so.
  • Everyone but Stevie Thompson Jr. shot amazing from three-point land. Stevie was 0-5, while the rest of the team went 8-10.
  • Only six Oregon State players scored tonight, but everyone that scored had at least 7 points.
  • This game was truly insane. Just look at this Box Score.
