Pat Casey must be ecstatic with the way all of his freshmen players have been playing this season. With freshman KJ Harrison leading the team with 7 home runs, and 26 RBI's. You can add another name to that list that being Drew Rasmussen name. Another freshman that has played far beyond his years with his first perfect game of his, or anyone's, college career for the Oregon State Beavers.
The Beavers Drew Rasmussen started the game at pitcher and quickly retired three batters with one strikeout but that would just be the start of things to come in a surprisingly quick game that was dominated by Rasmussen. Washington State started Joe Pistorese as pitcher, he would walk Jeff Hendrix as the lead off batter. Dane Lund would be thrown out at first by Pistorese on a sacrifice bunt advancing Jeff Hendrix to third. The next at bat, KJ Harrison would single to right field to score Hendrix giving the Beavers the early lead 0-1. The Beavers would finish the inning with 1 hit, 1 run and 1 left on base.
Rasmussen would open the top of the second just like the first with three up and three down this would set the tone for the rest of the game. He would also add two more strikeout to his total to have three in the first two innings he pitched. For the next five innings the Beavers would go scoreless as both teams defense would make it quick innings with easy fly outs and ground outs.
Drew Rasmussen would continue his streak of three up and three down. After holding the Washington State Cougars hitless for seven innings it became clear that Rasmussen could pitch his first perfect game of his young college career. Rasmussen would have 9 strikeouts in seven innings and be aided by the Beavers amazing fielding which continues to be one of their strong suits of the season.
Oregon State's batters would come alive in the 7th inning to put the game out of reach with two runs extending their lead to 0-3. Off of a Michael Gretler single between third base and shortstop to score Joey Jansen. Trever Morrison would score Kyle Noback off of a sacrifice bunt that would seal the deal and take some stress off of Rasmussen who was pitching an amazing game.
The 8th inning the Beavers infield and outfield would help their pitcher get all three outs, one a fly out to right field, the other two ground outs to second and third. A much relief to him as the perfect game was still in reach and exicitment buzz in the air at Goss Stadium.
The top of the 9th couldn't come soon enough for Beavers fans as they were rooting for their freshman pitcher to finish strong. The first two batters would foul out and ground out. In a fitting ending to Rasmussen perfect game he would strike out Ben Roberts swinging to clinch his first perfect game of his college career. Drew Rasmussen finished with 10 strikeouts on 103 pitches thrown and 27 batters faced. It was an amazing show of pitching and the Beavers should be proud of their fielding in helping to hold the Cougars scoreless.
Drew Rasmussen improves to 3-0 on the season, while Joe Pistorese drops to 3-2 on the season, despite the fact he threw a complete game for the Cougars. The Beavers improve to 17-5 overall, 3-2 in Pac 12 play and 9-0 at home. Washington State drops to 12-10. Oregon State leads the series 2-0 and hopes for the sweep tomorrow at 1pm.
