Beavers Beat Virginia 5-3, Force Deciding Game Tomorrow

After pitching three innings in Oregon State's 5-2 win over Rutgers, Daniel Turpen started this game-- he went 4 and a third, allowing three runs on four hits, with five strikeouts. Add his numbers from both games together, and Daniel went 7 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on five hits, three walks, and six strikeouts.

It was the Cavaliers that struck first in this game, putting three runs up in the fifth. Beau Seabury and Jeremy Ferrel led off with back to back singles. Third Baseman Patrick Wingfield was asked to bunt, and he did so successfully. He was thrown out at first by Turpen, advancing Seabury to third and Ferrel to second. The #9 hitter, Mike Mitchell, singled to right on a ball that should have been caught by OSU right fielder Braden Wells. That ball got past him for a double, scoring two runs. Tim Henry flied out to Hopkins in center, then Tyler Cannon doubled, driving in Mitchell, the third UVA runner of the inning to score. Multi-dimensional Cavalier Sean Doolittle grounded out to Wong at second to end the inning, but not before Virginia took a 3-0 lead, a lead they would hold until the eighth inning.

In the bottom of the sixth, Darwin Barney scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Mike Lissman. Joey Wong was forced out at third on the play, and Darwin was awarded home when UVA third baseman Patrick Wingfield interfered with Barney on the base path. That was all the Beavers could do in the sixth, but the run sure helped the Beavers stay in the game.

Lead off man Chris Hopkins delivered when he lead off the eighth inning with a blast deep to left field for his second home run of the year. This brought the Beavers within one, and that would all change after four singles and a sacrifice bunt scored two more Beavers in the inning; Joey Wong and Darwin Barney.

Jordan Lennerton added an insurance run in the bottom of the ninth with a leadoff home run, his seventh this year. That gave the Beavers a three run lead heading into the bottom of the ninth, and it was enough to hold off the Cavaliers.

After Daniel Turpen's four and a third, Blake Keitzman and Mark Grbavac combined for an inning of work, only allowing a single hit combined. From there on out it was Joe Patterson, the pitcher that started Friday's game against Rutgers for the Beavers. JoePa went three and two thirds, didn't give up any hits, and struck out five.

The win gives Oregon State their eighth consecutive win facing elimination, dating back to the sixth they won in Omaha. The win also sets up a date with Virginia tomorrow to decide the winner of the regional, and to see who will play Michigan (yes Vanderbilt lost!) in the Super Regionals starting Saturday.

The winner of that game will host; Michigan did not file for a Regional or Super Regional hosting bid.

The game will start at noon on the East Coast, or 9:00 a.m. if you're on the West Coast.

Go Beavers!
