Hate Week (and a half) Civil War Open Thread
Alright guys. Both teams won. This sets up 12 days until an epic Civil War. Congratulations to Oregon for pulling it out in the end, getting that demon off their backs. But we Beaver fans have a demon of our own, and his name is Sixtyfivethirtyeight. So this next week and a half there is a lot to talk about, so I figured this will be our Civil War Hate Week (and a half) Open Thread. The only thing I ask is that you rec this post so that is stays at the top of the fanposts. GO BEAVS!
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation or the Building the Dam staff. FanPost opinions are valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable Oregon State fans.

To start us off
What did we think of Arizona being able to contain Oregon’s offense? Oregon looked about as human as they have since Boise St, and I think our coaching staff needs to break this game film down and do EXACTLY what Arizona did. Contain Masoli, force him to make decisions, few blitzes, play good pass defense. And how bad did their defense look tonight? This game looks 100x more winnable than it did a few weeks ago. I can’t believe it. 2nd biggest Civil War in history, and its all for the taking. Bragging rights, Pac10 championship, Rose Bowl. It’s all on the line. I’m so wired right now

Crash the defensive ends and hit Masoli on every.single.play.
just like how defenses got teams away from running the Wishbone offense.
Force MASLOLI to beat you with his arm, not his legs.

But, yeah, I put 8 men in the box and force Masoli to beat me throwing the football.

I know Masoli gets some crap about being a questionable passer but you really don’t want to do this given your secondary. If anyone gets past the first level, it’s a broken tackle to the house. Also, even though we prefer to run, Arizona was giving us the pass all day and we made plays, especially Maehl. Masoli’s completing almost 60% of his passes. You don’t want to isolate in the box or we’ll throw WR screens and TE curls to the sideline all day

Well there’s no question that your offense is dynamic. Stats don’t lie. But given the options of forcing Masoli to throw and forcing him to run, I say contain him and force to throw. Obviously its a pick-your-poison sort of deal, but I don’t think anyone could argue with saying that Masoli is a better runner than he is a thrower

I don’t know. To me, it’s a simple matter of playing to your strengths. Your corners haven’t had the best year and putting them on an island against a spread is tough call. Yeah, Masoli may not be able to make all of the passes, but the ones he does are always going to be high risk for you. By taking your best players and crowding the box, you have to pray that the ball is thrown badly, gets tipped or your corner makes an amazing tackle.
Obviously you follow the Beavs more than Oregon so I may be stepping a bit over the line here, but it seems to me that the strength of Oregon State is their Linebackers and D-Line. Let those guys make plays and use their superior ability to help out on the passing game so you don’t get burned on the edge. What Arizona did effectively was put a spy (sometimes 2) on Masoli and keyed the rest of their front on LMJ. The problem is that Masoli made great plays on the rollout. Yeah, he got stopped a few times for loss more than he normally would, but the edges were open most of the time and even when they weren’t, our receivers made plays.

You're not stepping over the line. You're absolutely correct
Our strength at D this year is in the front 7. And our DBs haven’t the best year. But let’s face it, neither have your receivers. Outside of Maehl, nobody has really stepped up (not to say that there isn’t talent there, they just haven’t lived up to it). I’ve seen about 5 games this year, and all I remember seeing is dropped ball after dropped ball, and Masoli making some throws that his arm strength probably doesn’t allow. He gets away with it because often times the receivers are matched up one on one, so there isn’t much need to “thread the needle.” My point is, we want to make sure we stop the run first and force Masoli to pass. That’s our best option

um, not really
Arizona was giving us the pass all day and we made plays,
You guys were shut down until the 4th quarter. You had one good drive to start the 4th, then were giving a huge break when AZ’s punter shanked a punt, and then had that miracle 2 minute drive to tie it up.
"Your best?!?!! Losers always whine about their best. Winners go home and &^%@ the prom queen"
2008 Civil War: Oregon 65 - Oregon State 38
I guess I shouldn’t be surprised at us seeing the game differently. We had a great 1st quarter, almost entirely on Masoli’s arm. We had a few bad drives in the second quarter including a drive that ended after 1 play on a pick. If you go back and look at the play by play, the passes were there to be made. Sometimes it was a great play by the coverage but more often it was a mistimed throw or a drop.
Arizona was very much giving us the pass all day. If it wasn’t for them giving up that pass, we wouldn’t have tied it up and we certainly wouldn’t have won in overtime.

They played solid pass defense all game long. I know they gave up some big plays early and on late on, but after the first two possessions, it seemed like a lot of punts and then the interception, until Masoli led the late drive.

Kristick would be great on Masoli but then who do you put on Ed Dickson? The way Kristick plays, I believe he could easily shut down Masoli’s running if he was the spy. However, Dickson could have a big day without a big play cover on him.

Again, it comes down to letting Masoli beats you with his arm vs letting him beat you with his legs
if him and Dickson have a big day and Oregon State loses, then so be it. But I’d rather play the odds of having that happening vs. having Masoli and LMJ have a big day on the ground.

Extra time is good
Having a bye week to prepare for the Oregon offense will be an advantage for the Beavers. Giving the defense extra time to prepare will definitely help. Plus having our last game before the Civil War being against WSU is almost like having two byes. No way do the Ducks score 65 points again.

One day in an elementary school in Portland a teacher asks her class if the Oregon Ducks are their favorite football team. The whole class says yes, except for Little Jimmy.

Little Jimmy says, "The Oregon State Beavers "
The teacher asks, “Well, why is that?”
Little Jimmy says, “Well, my dad is a Beave fan, my mom is a Beaver fan, I guess that makes me a Beaver fan.”
The teacher angered by his reply says, “If your dad was a moron and your mom was an idiot what would that make you?”
Little Jimmy says, “Well, I guess that would make me an Oregon fan.”

I guess we just have to root for Arizona to beat USC
I stated this over at AtQ, but it would be so dumb, with the way the season has played out, for USC to go to the Holiday Bowl. Arizona, Oregon State, and Stanford have been better teams all year long, and one of them deserves the Holiday Bowl (if we were to lose, of course). Now, we can end all the madness and send USC to El Paso if you guys let us win, what do ya say?

LaMichael James had the flu.
Duck fan here -
Arizona definitely gave the Beavers some sort of template for how to deal with the Oregon offense, but I think a big part of the Ducks sputtering on offense had to do with James being left out of the mix for big portions of the game. He had the flu this week, and you could clearly see at one point in the game he was close to puking on the field and had to take himself out for a play.
The read option is predicated on the fact that Masoli actually has an option, and once James wasn’t getting consistent looks, you could see their defense was able to lock in much more on Masoli than a team normally does. Look what happened when James had a few decent runs in the stretch run of that game – Masoli was able to free up a little space for himself. Should be an interesting CW. Canfield will be the best quarterback Oregon has seen all season from what I can tell.
Interesting
I was wondering why James went out for a bit when he didn’t look injured at all. Although the talk recently of players playing with the flu is kind of worrisome.
He still ran for 116 yards on 18 carries. I’m just excited

Yeah, I couldn’t believe he came up with that many yards. He was used so sparingly that he had some big holes whenever he did touch the ball. At least he was coming out of the game for a real health issue…unlike the Stanford game when his shoulder was, ahem, mysteriously hurt after two very bad drops out of the backfield.
The question on everyone's mind
Will CV come back if the Beavers win?

This is how
Quizz plays, we control the ball longer and keep the ball out of Jeremiah “I don’t know what you’re talking about but he just scored another touchdown” Johnson’s hands. That also keeps the game closer, which means the crowd is in it longer.
Not to mention Quizz is good for another 14 points and keeps the Duck defense more balanced.
If we don’t win, then it is really, really close.
December 3rd. Autzen Stadium. Pac-10 Championship Game.
I’m sorry, but this is simply delusional. If Quizz plays, maybe OSU “controlls the ball,” but all that really means is that both teams run less plays. So really, OSU would have likely scored less (you can’t just assume another 14 points) as they wouldn’t have been passing, and thus not scoring quickly.
But here’s the main thing that OSU fans like to ignore, OSU had their chances in the second half. The offense made a run at things, and did what they could to get it close. But every single time that happened, Oregon scored. Quizz does not change that. Maybe it’s closer, but the OSU defense looked like a JV high school team against that Ducks offense. One player, on the opposite side of the ball does not change that.
Oregon was able to get 694 yards because the OSU offense was matching them for the most part. If Quizz plays, the game gets slowed down, OSU holds the ball more, but they still can’t stop the Ducks. Keeping it away from the Ducks doesn’t really help the team in the end if both teams end up with the same number of possessions.
--AddictedToQuack, SBNation's Oregon Ducks blog
thanks for speaking for ALL of us
But here’s the main thing that OSU fans like to ignore
I for one, and others I know, actually did not ignore this at all. Many of us made no excuses for the defensive showing. But it wasn’t a “JV high school team,” come on now who is being irrational and also by the way I think you are taking away from how well the UO offense played that game to say this.
-RVM
Maybe if Quizz plays
Oregon isn’t allowed to get up to that 20 point lead because OSU is able to match them possession for possession.
We just don’t know.

Thanks Dom
Thurmond and Catchings don’t matter. Both teams have had chances to fill those spots all year long. At this point, the guys in those positions are THE starters.
This is as healthy of a Civil War as we have had in a long time. The keys that matter
Both teams have healthy starting QBs, starting RBs, and starting front 7s. What else could you ask for going into your 12th game. I bet most teams would envy the health of either team right now (Oklahoma anyone?), so there better not be any excuses after

But remember the pick 6's
The first one would have never happened. We would have been running the ball to end the half, not passing it
And we kicked field goals a couple of times that would have been touchdowns
I’m not trying to say that we would have absolutely won with Quizz, but I think any logical fan knows that a player like Quizz would have changed the game in some way.

I don’t doubt that at all. He would have changed the game. But I just don’t see how any Beaver fan can actually say that that Quizz would have made a 27 point difference.
I mean, granted, OSU’s offense would have been different, but you have to throw out 75% of what you saw on the field that day.
--AddictedToQuack, SBNation's Oregon Ducks blog
On this we agree!
But I just don’t see how any Beaver fan can actually say that that Quizz would have made a 27 point difference.
He wouldn’t, and I actually believe the outcome would have been about the same overall. Sure it would have been “different” but the defense was not prepared for that game, the offense still would had to throw to keep up, etc. The score would have been about the same.
To be your friend for a few brief moments, you have to note that some OSU people said having Canfield in there would have made a big difference. Nope, that game was lost on the other side of the ball.
But as noted above many on both sides like to get into the guessing game, just like with some of the UO people with Dixon, so…
Anyway, to get back into it, be kinder to Connor man, he’s okay.

Remember I’m the one who gets cranky over here! So take that with a grain too! And it is that time of the season.
Connor has had some zingers, but he’s cool. I agree with a lot of what he says, but have no problems with calling him out. Guess felt you were lumping us all in together in your call out and the “jv” stuff was a bit grumpy inducing.

-RVM
I apologize for my harshness.
Did I read that correctly?
…solid debate in the next week and a half.
To ensure this, I propose a new-ID posting lock by SBN. Anyone who hasn’t posted previous to this week should have to wait until the day of the game. This would cut down the ESPN-article-style posts/comments that make the baby jesus cry. You know, the posts where people debate which school is better academically, which school is in a worse town, which school has more jerks at it, hick/hippie jokes, etc., etc.
What I don't get
Is what the **** are some of the Cal fans (at least one so far that is) doing in on this type of posting? Should they be basking in the shine of their ax trophy?
-RVM
They’re a sad lot. Always peaking over the fence to see what’s going on up here in Oregon while trying to tell themselves they’re on the verge of something great in Berkeley.
It’s also adorable how they like to call Stanford fans elitist and stuck up, as if Stanford is the only bay area school with a reputation like that!
At least they're not Arizona fans.

Another thing we need to remember
This year’s Beaver team is a lot more dimensional and playing completely different than last year’s team. I think we touched on this yesterday in the game thread, but its true. Last year we were kind of skating by in our games, kept on chugging along, and met up with an Oregon team that was absolutely rolling. We ran into a buzz saw, and I don’t think last year we were actually very good (I still say Moevao is not a good QB).
This year, after we got going, we started dominating teams. We dominated a Stanford team that has shown they are quite the formidable opponent. We blew out both Washington schools (I know, who hasn’t. But even UW hung around with us last year). It just has a completely different feel. I know Oregon has a great team this year, but I am more confident going into this game than I was last year, even if the game is at Autzen. Canfield is playing as good as any QB in the country, and Quizz is being Quizz. Should be a fun one

It's never pointed out, but...
Yes, “Quizz doesn’t play defense.”
Yeah. ok. We got it.
But the point is, our team revolves
around him. When he’s in, we never
get blown out. Besides the debacle
at Penn State, wanna know the biggest
margin of defeat we’ve suffered with
him playing?
10.
Cincinatti 28-18.
In other words, with Quizz, we don’t
get blown out. When we’re able to run
the ball, (and if you doubt we will, look
at how easily Furd and Zona slammed
it on you,) we don’t get blown out. Which
makes it utterly laughable to see Duck
fans on O-live saying “It won’t even be
close.” I’m not making excuses for last

All in all: very excited about the CW,

I like it when Duck fans refer to OSU as OSC like its some sort of insult
Or OAC (Oregon Agriculture College), like we’re supposed to get butt hurt about what we used to be called.
YOU GOD DAMN WEBFOOTS!
Points to anyone who sees what I did there…

Are you referring to this?
From (shudder) goducks.com:
L.H. Gregory, sports editor of The Oregonian, has been credited with coining Webfoots as the school’s athletic nickname, even though the students had seen themselves as such since the turn of the century. Headline writers searching for ways to parse Webfoots into their sports pages began churning out Ducks, which the students eventually voted as their new nickname over Timberwolves and Lum-berjacks. A second student-body election in 1932 beat back the challenges of Trappers, Pioneers, Yellowjackets and Spearsmen, the latter in honor of football coach C.W. Spears, who left before the ’32 season for a similar post at Wisconsin.
Dammit, why didn’t they stick with “Spearsmen?”
Soy anranjado....
Oregon's 1939 National Championship basketball team was referred to as the "Webfoots"
I thought it was their “unofficial” nickname until the students voted on the Ducks

Yellowjackets?!
That might fit with their new fashion-trendy uniforms though…
Speaking of unis, I heard that the Beavs might be in the Nike “Rotating Uniform Parade” starting next year…

Told us that Nike has signed about 25 teams so far and that we’re one of them.
The most important question is: how many shades of orange are there?!

Not for the sake of sounding consistent… but I actually do like these uniforms. Just needs a slightly bigger hint of Orange though. Like Orange piping around the numbers (Though that might be one thing I like about this one)

Its too much likeOregon
I just don’t want to get into that realm. We are not the same programs.

Yes, I agree.
I like where we’re at. Nice, simple, clean. Nothing reflective, no see-thru names, good stuff.
That’s kinda why I’m saying “Not for the sake of sounding consistent”.
I like these uniforms entirely separate from any UO connection. I like them on their own merit. Not because it’s “Oregon-like”.
It’s clean, with a very tiny flare.
It's spelled "S-H-U-V-3-0-0-0"
I was just saying something, but not sure anymore, but it probably wasn’t meant to be flattering.

Only with the proper training and skills can you master what goes on over at CGB DBD. That is the most ridiculous concoction of random conversations, pictures, and quotes that go something like this:
“Yeah I think our football team get on the right track”
“Our track team is ranked #1 in the country”
“Remember when Usain Bolt ran track this summer”
“You mean Bolt the dog from that animated movie”
“I don’t watch that children’s stuff, that’s for the Furd alum”
“Furd is gay”
“Gays are people too!”
“Jeff Tedford is a person too!”
“Does that mean Jeff Tedford is gay?”
“Well if you use the transitive property that says Jeff Tedford is a person, persons are gay, then yes, Jeff Tedford is gay”
“Not gayer than Nestor over at bRuins Nation”
“Ok guys, I’ve posted 1,000 times today. Gotta eat dinner. See you tomorrow GO BEARS!”

Dammit...
I was hoping for those Ohio State throwback uni’s they wore on Saturday…yecch
I’m just worried that we can handle all the combinations – “no, it’s the LIGHT orange jersey, the SUPER BLACK pants, and the BLAZING white helmets!”
Soy anranjado....
I’ve always wondered if Orange helmets would look cool. But then I remember, I’m not a Duck fan
I like our jerseys this year. Can’t we just keep them that way?

Keeping with the uniform talk
One thing I would like to see is Oregon is green jerseys/helmets and whatever combination of pants, and us in our orange jerseys. That would be kind of cool.
2006 CW we were in our blacks and Oregon was in their home yellows, that was cool to see
Here, if you don’t remember

I’d like to see the old school unis… but I’d want your team to play more like the Stanford game and less like the Cal game too…
The only way I think it works is if Oregon wears the all Yellow uni/pants
Our black pants together would be too similar and confusing I think

I don’t think we have yellow pants or helmets anymore. Just yellow jerseys.
So it would need to be green/green/green.

I saw that a while ago, very funny.
It’s good that such a monster can actually be a source of laughter, otherwise his image would be much more haunting.
Gotta say, he definitely killed that style of mustache. Luckily, the 80s brought us something so much cooler…

While I'm not a fan of the song or video, I'm less of a fan of the whining and generally foul stuff coming from the new-name duck posters.
I still like the idea of blocking new screen names until kickoff. But I guess that wouldn’t be as much fun for some…
Yeah, I think the musician there definitely has some talents, but I'm not a fan of sports-related music.

No, unfortunately, they aren’t true duck fans – they are obnoxious bigots that only jump on the program success bandwagon.

As soon as your team is successful, you guys seem to experience of swell of support and “fans”… good for cash flow, bad for fan representation (not that we don’t have our bad apples over here. We’re a little bit more even keel over here and unfortunately our cash flow reflects that.
