Reasonable ranking for Beavers

This is a reasonable ranking for the Beavers in the current situation. Of course, if the Beavers beat up the Cougars as expected, someone ahead of them is likely to fall and we will move up a bit.

The important part is to take care of business and win each of the next three games, one at a time. Of course, good things will happen if the Beavers win their next two games.

Beavers favored by 31

I can’t believe the Beavers are favored to win a conference game by 31 points. Wow.

flavor of the week

is Stanford. Shows how much the pollsters pay attention to the Pac 10. Do the rankings mean anything to anybody besides the SEC teams? I guess they do for TCU, Cinci, and Boise St. just because of the fact they just get screwed by it. It’s sad to me that all this great football that is played in the west is discarded by the myopic sportswriters who can only follow the names of schools and Teblow, Saban, Miles, McCoy, Notre Dame, and Spurrier. I think Harbaugh has it right if he wants national attention by being brash, yelling at the refs and going for two while dominating the other team. Mr. Rogers….I mean…Mr. Riley doesn’t take that approach so we fly under the radar…and I prefer it that way.

Beavers and Ducks

If the Beavers and Ducks had beaten Cinci and Boise State, the rankings right now of the Pac 10 would be far different.

Trap game?

Joe A. made his bi-annual trek to Corvallis from the Land of Purple Reign and came away quite satisfied. Especially because he sat right next to the Husky fan section and was able to witness the abuse heaped on the lame UW “fans” who left early. By “early” he means starting one minute into the third quarter.

I haven’t yet seen anyone espouse caution about the WSU game, so let me be the first. As pathetic as the Cougs are, trap games are more about the favored team than the doormat team. When teams play to not lose instead of winning, guys don’t go all out and that’s where injuries happen. I submit to you the the OSU/USC contests of 2006 and 2008. In somebody else’s house against a team with nothing to lose but everything to gain (read: OSU during, um, forever and ever) it’s unwise to be careless with the mental preparations. Pete Carroll is apparently terrible at this. Mike Riley’s team is rarely favored by a lot of points, so the book on him is unclear. Joe A. will not be on the “no way will we lose to WSU” bandwagon and will maintain this Eeyore perspective unless the Beavs are up by 21 halfway through the fourth quarter. Crappy weather, Quizz gets knocked out early, then Canfield, an inopportune fumble or interception, Cougs smell the blood in the water and anything can happen. Anyone smirking at my comments are advised to review OSU/UW 1985. And that was a HOME game for the Fuskers.

Subject switch: why does Riley refuse to establish the run early? Very frustrating.

going to call you out on this one Joe A

A bit too much pessimism to be found here. Carroll and USC handle this type of deal very differently than Riley and OSU. Overlook them? No way. Here’s what will motivate the team: Numbers, and putting them up, such as I’m sure Quizz wants to jack up his rushing total to get above UO’s James and make a run at Gerhart. Canfield will be playing for all conference QB status and so on. There might not seem to be a lot to play for besides an easy W but there is. Oh, did I mention this is a game they need to win to have any chance of going to the Rose Bowl?

I agree that the game is a very very serious one, but I just don’t think it will be overlooked because it is WSU.

I’m also not sure about the establish the run early comments either. That seems a bit of a no win type of critique, since if he ran it all the time at the outset and people stacked the box and stopped it everyone would be screaming about “Throw the ball Riley! Stretch out the defense!”

By the way I probably sat through many of those games you did in the 80s and 90s you sat through (nothing like being on the other end of that type of score against UW, at home, in the rain, sigh, memories), so I do really understand the caution about OSU football. Just go with it a bit more man! This is a different program now! Sit back and enjoy (I think it could well only get better over the next few years of Riley’s run here at OSU)!

WHO will not wear the ribbon?

Joe A. getting called out? Wot? Well, I never.

Perhaps my trauma runs too deep. However, I submit to you OSU/UO 2008 where the Beavs played like they were getting whiplash trying crane their neck from side to side in order to get a view of the Rose Bowl and failed to see running back/thug Blount in the ol’ rear view. The stakes were just as high in that game as the two games in front of us. I am nervous anytime OSU is favored for a road game. They always….ALWAYS…play better as the underdog. I mean, I know it’s impossible to be the underdog against WSU but betting lines over 30 points don’t help maintain that fightin’ spirit.

My “establish the run” comment concerns opening the game with three straight passes resulting in a sack (and fumble) and two completions for a total of three yards gained in the series. I don’t like a pass for the first play…I’d rather see the OL get to fire out rather than sit back for the bull rush especially when your line isn’t loaded with seniors. What’s wrong with a draw to Quizz? An effective play for which the playbook page seemingly dropped out.

Just so you don’t get the wrong idea about Joe A., here’s something positive…..I really liked Canfield’s run to the 9 yard line to collect a first down on third and five in the third quarter. He knew just where he had to go and got down perfectly.

I’m enjoying Coach Riley’s reaction to those who are all pouty about not putting in all the scrubs when OSU has a big lead. Perhaps due to residual annoyance from all the whining coming out of Pullman last year, this year he’s all “I don’t know what y’all are talking about, we’re just trying to play a football game.” Joe A. is amused to no end that there’s grumbling about OSU being too hard on the HUSKIES. That’s rich. Joe A. lives in Seattle, and is not one to rub it in. Wait..check that…he is indeed.

2008

Yes that is all true. I never wanted to think about that game again (thanks).

BUT, very different team and different year this year. Last year the air was leaking in that UA game and especially with Quizz going out the next game did not bode well at all. Too much urgency, too well rested duckies, too thin on our stars on the offense side, etc.

Sure as heck I wanted the Beavs win that game last year and go to the Rose Bowl, and sure as heck that was embarrassing. But here’s two things that makes me a bit more vocal and confident about this year:

1) Different schedule to wrap up the year, WSU and then a bye is totally choice, UO has all or nothing game with UA then a bye then another all or nothing game with OSU.

2) The passing attack and why I’m not as concerned about establishing the run (this team will run the ball, and I’ll assume it will be something in the UO game that the offense will really work towards, just a feeling I have). But we have a stable QB situation this year, whereas last year it was back and forth and back again. Not only that the QB this year is beyond stable and is playing as well as anyone we have had back there (yes even Matt Moore at the end of 2006).

Again, though I think there will be enough to play for that we are going to hear some Cougars complaining about running up the score again this year. And that’s funny about the UW game when Riley and co. did start to rotate the defense where it was basically the second team and that’s basically the only time UW could score with their first team!

And can't get a camera to Pullman!

Top 20 team, gunning for the Rose Bowl, and not even regional/local coverage.

Radio only announced today for YET another Coug game.

There are high schools with better coverage than happens up in Pullman.

More ammunition for the SEC proponents, and yet another reason the PAC-9.5 network is LONG OVERDUE!

Maybe Tape Delayed.

Today was the chance for FSN to make something happen

Miracles can always happen, but the odds on miracles are not so good.

Until they can get their act up to WAC standards in Pullman, expect more of this.

I hesitate to throw stones at them, because there was a time not yet forgotten when OSU was even worse off, but in this day and age, the ESPN, the SEC, and the like wait for no one.

Glanville may be done at PSU after today; perhaps Paul Wulff could go there, where he at least won’t have far to fall before hitting bottom.

I hate osubeavers.com

It had the little TV logo next to the WSU game and I got all excited, but when I clicked on it it said that there would be no live or delayed coverage.
