Anyone know how to get to Pasadena?
The Beavers have the best record in the conference over the last two plus years in October, November, and December, and are likely to be favored in all of their remaining games. Along with Arizona, the Beavers are the only team in the conference who controls their own path to the Rose Bowl.
When it comes to the Rose Bowl, Mike Riley says, "The Beavers are right in the middle of the soup." image via Seinfeld
Let's take a quick peek at OSU's recent results against remaining opponents:
ASU 1-2, winning the last time they played in Reser.
@UCLA 0-3, losing the last time they played in the Rose Bowl.
Cal 2-1, losing the last time they played in Reser.
@UA 2-1, winning the last time they played in Arizona.
uowned 2-1, winning the last time they played in Reser. (Note: The perennially 5th place ducks have actually NEVER won in Corvallis since the stadium's name was changed to Reser Stadium in the last century. Their lack of talent and depth typically prevents them from being able to overcome injuries and field a competitive team late in the season. Even last year when they had their starting quarterback longer than any other team in the conference, they still faded. Here's to hoping that maybe our little sisters will be able to fix their historic lack of talent some day and avert late season disaster.)
What matchup do you see as the biggest speed bump on the road to the Rose Bowl?

Let the Flames Begin but...
Oregon is in a much better place injury wise than they were last year. Both Oregon and Oregon State have beaten up on teams that should have beat. Just remember, you are hanging your hat on beating USC. Your other wins are against the Washington schools and a bad Hawaii team. Oregon has the same issue in that they have beaten up on the Washington schools, beat what looks to be a bad Purdue team, UCLA and a joke in Utah State.
You may have confidence going into the second half of the season but you still have some meaty games to go, just like Oregon.
Also, better start rooting for USC to make the title game. If you guys both win out, I’m pretty sure they go to the rose bowl because of their higher BCS standing if they don’t make it into the National Championship game.
If you want Rose Bowl, you don’t entirely control your own destiny….

Possibly a fail, possibly not
Good post, however I think you still have to be ranked in the BCS to be eligible to go to a BCS game

So, what you’re saying is you didn’t click the link.
“The Pacific-10 Rose Bowl representative shall be that member’s team with the best won-lost percentage record in Conference games”
I’m no English major, but I think that means BCS rankings have nothing to do with who goes to the Rose Bowl.

Also
This is what I was referring to that was recently updated at http://www.bcsfootball.org/bcsfb/eligibility
The champions of the ACC, Big East, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-10, and Southeastern conferences will have automatic berths in one of the participating bowls after the 2006 and 2007 regular seasons.
The automatic clause is recent so my information was slightly outdated. My apologies

I voted for Cal
because they are the best team remaining on the schedule. But UCLA proved that they actually CAN win, and we haven’t had the best luck against the Bruins the last few years. For whatever reason, Dorrell had our number. Hopefully this year we change that. GO BEAVS

All four games are weird.
ASU – Team with a senior quarterback who has the potential to eat the OSU secondary alive. At the same time, OSU is better and has won their last eleven games coming off a bye or going into a bowl.
UCLA – For some reason we play terrible football against the Bruins. They are one of those teams that sucks but always finds a way to stay in the football game. Still, we should win this game. If we can establish Jacquizz then we should win this game. On defense, it comes down to pressuring Craft and not letting him get the ball downfield.
Cal – This game is at home, the week after they take on USC. The chances are good with the Beavs at Reser, but the Bears are a very talented team. This scares me less than UA only because it’s at home.
UA – Freaks me out. OSU, if they win the previous three games, will be playing for the Rose Bowl and pressure will be huge. With Moevao at quarterback, I don’t see the offense suffering as he seems to be invulnerable to pressure. What freaks me out is the prospect of (a) the offensive line having approximately 16 false starts and (b) Willie Tuitama throwing deep all day. All in all, OSU should win… but it’s a scary game.
by Cablinasian on Oct 19, 2008 10:36 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Yep
ASU – Probably the “least” concerning for me overall but still considering them to show up. OSU is playing much better ball right now but ASU is not a horrible team. My guess is Carpenter will have a little success here and there on passing, much like UW did at times, but OSU should be able to bend and not break with ASU having no running game and putting pressure on the QB. Sounds a little like the UW game I know, but that’s what I’m kind-of seeing. The ASU vs. UO game should show us a little more where ASU is at for the second half of their season.
UCLA – Close to being the very “least” concerning game, but as you noted “For some reason we play terrible football against the Bruins.” For as much Riley seems to have USC’s number UCLA seems to have his! I actually think they are playing about even with ASU now, but this could change a little down the road for UCLA is on a minor success bubble right now that could pop anytime. OSU should have no problems and has more talent.
Cal – Although the way the recent history has gone the Cal game is no gimme being at Reser! It almost seems to be a better chance for us if it was at their place! But yes this should be a damn good game. Two teams of very close talent on both sides of the ball, but here’s where I will give the advantage to the Beavs: Coaching and how that translates to the second half season push.
UA – You know I’m still not sold on UA (VD you reading this!). They seem to win a big one every year and this seems to be it and you know how Cal seems to have some choke games later in the season. BUT they have showed some scary things, they are better this year by far, it is on the road, and also if it comes to OSU being on the edge of winning out (Pac-10 title right around the corner) we could start to show jitters with this young team (yes the pressure will be huge). I don’t know if I can call this one yet.
UO – This could be an interesting game…but I’m holding off on my thoughts until later. Especially let’s see how they come out against ASU this upcoming week.
Overall, I think OSU is in a great position, BUT a long way to go and the games all will be challenges. As others have mentioned we have won the last two games we were suppose to, now the run really begins. Interesting that this season has started to play out in agreement with CV’s thoughts about how the Stanford game was a much more important game for us than Penn St. This has come to be proven out I think. (Oh, and where is my sweater, you lying…!!!)

My Thoughts
Arizona State-Sort of like the Utah game in the sense that it’s kind of a trap game. Other than that this should be a pretty easy game.
UCLA-Easy win, at home. But because this one is on the road it worries me. Especially being in the Rose Bowl, we have not had good luck there. Somehow, though I think that factor will fire the players up to return there in January.
California-If the Beavers get by the Devils and Bruins this could probably be the craziest game Reser Stadium has ever seen. Oregon State would be in the Top 25 and Cal would be too. Also, if Texas loses a game before then, there are not that many good games that weekend, which might mean the first ever GameDay trip to Corvallis. I know that might be a stretch, but it’s fun to dream isn’t it.
Arizona-Just like the UCLA game, this is tough because it’s on the road. Should be a hard fought game but if the Beavers should be fired up if they have won the previous three.
Oregon-If we are 8-3, and the Ducks are 9-2, both teams would be in the Top 20, and GameDay would have no choice. This should be the best game of the year, by far. I hate the Ducks more than anybody, but I have to admit thay do look pretty good.
See you in Pasadena!

Good calls
Except not sure I’m as up on the Ducks as you are at this point in time. I’m not sure they can come together and be a 9-2 team especially with the lack of a throwing game and the secondary play. Yes they have the talent to turn it around, but I’m not sure the talent is aligned to make that type of run. I think they could well have all they can handle against ASU. The at Cal game will be very difficult too. If they get through those two road games with Ws they could be very tough, but Stanford and Arizona at Autzen probably won’t be gimmes either. But you knows, the Pac-10 is going to have a wild second half IMO.

75% of the time they collapse late in the season...
…specifically due to lack of talent.

That’s a little ridiculous, but not entirely off base.
For ’07, the expectations to have your bench warming WRs, 5th String QB, and lower depth RBs have enough talent and composure to lead your team to victory at the end of the season is just whacked thinking.
Injuries are part of the game, but they are an undefined variable that is impossible to predict or rely on. Far from a fluke (Which is a word with the positive implication of “Good Luck”. Fun fact. You might want to look into the meaning and purpose of satire too! It’s neat.). I seriously have to question ones intelligence reasoning and logic if they don’t at least acknowledge that losing a staggering amount of skill position players to injury is unfortunate, and will typically result in a team performing sub-par.

The multiple collapses are from a fluke.
2002, 2004, 2006, 2007—most recent years.
Don’t kid yourself. None of those receivers were very good and oregon probably had their starting quarterback longer than ANY team in the conference in 2007. It was also the only one of those years with a first round running back to carry the load, the best running back having the best season in the hundred and some year history of the school.
The fact that there’s only 5 NFL starters who played at uowned certainly doesn’t support the fluke argument as much as it does the lack of talent/depth argument.

Oregon
I hate the beavs more than anybody. I also love the ducks more than anybody but there is no way that neither Oregon schools will make it through the rest of the Pac-10 unscathed. Plus if the ducks are 9-2 and the beavs are 8-3, GameDay will have a lot of other choices for example: Oklahoma at OKlahoma State, Georgia Tech at Georgia and the border war Kansas at MIssouri.
by Harringtoncuz3 on Oct 22, 2008 8:04 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Oklahoma vs. Oklahoma State
That is the only good game. Georgia is good but Georgia Tech isn’t. And Kansas is a pretender and Missouri made me want to puke when they played Texas. No way can you convince me that those three games are better than a rivalry game with Rose Bowl implications and two Top 20 teams.

As much as I like Rose Bowl Talk...
We have five very tough games ahead of us. Any one of which we could easily loose. I don’t see us being favored in either the Cal or Arizona game, and as much as I would like to see us blowout the ducks I think it will be a very close game. The only game I feel confident about is the ASU game.

Rose Bowl Selection
Just got to thinking that if both us and USC win out we win the pac-10 and the tiebreak. But if USC should go to the national championship game (don’t know how likely that is, but who knows a USC-Texas rematch would get a lot of hype) is the Rose Bowl obligated to take the Beavers? I know if USC wins the conference and goes to the NC game there is no obligation to take the #2, but is the #2 goes to the NC is there an obligation to take the #1. Even if there isn’t an obligation I’m pretty sure they would do it anyway (like they did for Illinois last year) but who knows.

Woof
by Charles Barkley McLovin on Oct 20, 2008 1:04 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
The only exception is unless the #1 of the Pac-10 goes to the National Championship. Then the Pac-10 spot is an At-Large bid, and without a bunch of other ridiculous exceptions that strong-arms the Rose Bowl, they’ll pick the 2nd place team in the conference, much like they did for the Big-10 (Ref: ’07 Illinois).
Rose Bowl values tradition over quality of game.
The point is, the Rose Bowl goes to the #1 of the Pac-10; If the #1 team receives and accepts a bid for another bowl game (National Championship Game), the Rose Bowl bid becomes an At-Large. The Rose Bowl can then, for the most part, pick whomever they want.
With 2-3 BCS Busters (Including Notre Dame), they could strong arm the Rose Bowl into picking one of them, but that is unlikely.

Rose Bowl values 50,000 fans from another state importing their money to Pasadena for a few days...
…it’s one of the only sporting events that always gets good ratings every year no matter what. It’s also the only game on TV at that time and, for a lot of people, it’s the only college game that they will watch all year. For whatever reason, the other bowls don’t have that same kind of mass appeal to non-sports fans like the Rose Bowl does. I blame it on hang overs.
Because it has automatic TV money that’s not really dependent on the matchup, the Rose Bowl used to have the rule that the team that hadn’t been there the longest would get the tiebreaker so they would get the most people traveling there. That was before all the BCS mythical title baloney came around.
The Rose Bowl is a REALLY BIG DEAL to Big-10 and Pac-10 fans for traveling. If you select them, they will come.
by CV3000 on Oct 20, 2008 5:48 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
While that’s very true, any argument would only deal with “what-ifs”. All I know is that everyone expected USC to destroy Illinois – and everyone was right. It was a pretty miserable game to watch, in my opinion. It got great ratings – but I would argue that it would get more, or better ratings with a better match up, but that’s where the what-ifs come in..
I would rather have a real playoff system for the national championship, or go back to the traditional setting where conferences just went to their bowl.
