Oregon St. freshman guard Sydney Wiese has been named the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week.
Wiese was part of the outside shooting barrage the Beavers unleashed on Arizona Friday night, making 4 of the dozen 3 pointers that led the way to Oregon St.'s 78-48 win over the Wildcats, and finished with 14 points.
Sunday afternoon, Wiese was 5 of 10 from the field, with all of the shots coming from beyond the 3 point arc. Her 15 points, along with 4 assists and 4 rebounds, helped the Beavers to their 9th consecutive win, and the 3rd seen in next weekend's Pac-12 tournament, downing #20 Arizona St. 66-43.
Wiese has more made 3 pointers than any freshman in Pac-10/12 history.
It's the second time this season Wiese has been honored, along with the week of Jan. 13.
UPDATE:
Wiese was also 1 of 15 named to the Pac-12 All-Conference Team, and 1 of 5 named to the Conference All-Freshman team.
Sophomore center Ruth Hamblin was named to the 5 member Conference All-Defensive Team.
Hamblin and Jamie Weisner, who missed the second half of the conference campaign with a wrist injury, were honorable mention to the All-Conference team, and Gabriella Hanson was honorable mention to the All-Freshman team.
An interesting sidelight to Hamblin not being named to the All-Conference team is the fact that no centers appear on the 15 player list.
Stanford supplied two of the three personal honors, as Senior forward Chiney Ogwumike was named the Conference Player of the Year for the second year in a row, and Cardinal Coach Tara VanDerveer was named the Coach of the Year for the 4th year in a row, and 14th time in 28 seasons at Stanford.
Washington guard Kelsey Plum was named the Freshman of the Year.
