Nigel Burton will be Portland State’s next head football coach. The Nevada defensive coordinator is expected to be announced as Jerry Glanville’s successor at a news conference on Tuesday. Burton served five years as cornerbacks coach at Oregon State before becoming the Wolfpack’s D-coordinator in 2008. Prior to that, he coached cornerbacks for Tim Walsh at Portland State.
From the official release: Oregon State University Director of Athletics Bob De Carolis and Head Football Coach Mike Riley have accepted a formal invitation to play in the 18th annual MAACO Bowl Las Vegas Tues., Dec. 22 at 5 p.m. The game will be televised by ESPN from Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas. The No. 16 (AP)/No. 20 (USA Today) Beavers, 8-4 overall for the season and tied for second in the Pac-10 Conference at 6-3, will play the No. 15/14 Brigham Young University Cougars of the Mountain West Conference. BYU finished second in the MWC with an overall record of 10-2 and 7-1 within league play. More later.
Haven't seen an official announcement yet, but ESPN's Ted Miller is reporting that the Beavers are headed to Vegas to play BYU. It makes sense... as you'll see in the open thread we had going earlier (below), all the other bowls involving Pac-10 schools have been announced. Quickly, it's: Arizona- Holiday, Stanford- Sun, USC- Emerald, and Cal- Poinsettia.
