Oregon State relief pitcher Chase Watkins was selected by the Chicago Cubs in the ninth round of this year’s MLB Draft, with the 274th overall pick. Watkins is the second Beaver to be selected in this year’s drafted following Kevin Abel’s selection in the seventh round.

Watkins has only spent one season with the Beavers. Prior to 2021, he played for Cal Poly San Luis Obispo for one season, and spent a summer with the Corvallis Knights of the West Coast League. In his one season with the Beavers Watkins appeared in 25 games, pitching for 31.1 innings and amassing a 4.88 ERA and a 1.181 WHIP.

Watkins is the third pitcher picked by the Cubs in the 2021 Draft, with Chicago selecting Kansas State’s Jordan Wicks in the first round. The Cubs also grabbed Riley Martin from Quincy University in the fifth round.

Several other Beavers, including pitchers Jake Pfennigs and Will Frisch, are expected to go in today’s draft. Check back for further developments.
