The sophomore guard duo of Gianni Hunt and Jarod Lucas carried the load offensively on Wednesday night, as Oregon State grabbed it’s third-straight win on the road at Utah, 75-70.
Hunt shot an efficient 7-10 from the field, including a 3-4 day from behind the arc, to end the contest with 17 points off the bench, while Lucas posted a much-needed 16 points.
Forward Warith Alatishe, who was on the receiving end of countless drop-off plays, added a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, while also tallying 4 assists and 4 steals. Star guard Ethan Thompson didn’t have one of his better outings, ending with just 6 points, yet solid showings from Zach Reichle (9 points), Rodrigue Andela (7 points, 7 rebounds) and Roman Silva (7 points, 5 rebounds) helped the cause.
Overall, the game’s flow went as expected, with two more methodical teams combining for 19 lead changes and seven ties. However, Utah’s lack of bench depth came back to bite them, as Ian Martinez (3 points) was the only player to score off the pine.
Leading scorer Timmy Allen led the way for the Utes with 23 points, while Alfonso Plummer added 15 points and Branden Carlson pitched in 10 points.
They say in college basketball, sometimes the most important thing is to be playing well at the right time and the Beavers are doing just that, while also still having the chance to close their Pac-12 campaign back in Corvallis with a statement victory over rival Oregon.
It’s important to also note that head coach Wayne Tinkle’s program has now won 10 games in conference play for the second time in his tenure with Oregon State, the other one coming back during the 2018–2019 campaign.
Up Next: As mentioned, the Beavers will host the Ducks at 5:00 PM PT on Sunday, March 7th in their regular season finale. The game is set to be televised on Fox Sports 1.
