- During her Beavers career, Mikayla Pivec was known as being the “heart” of the Oregon State program, with her gutsy and energetic style of play. Now as she moves into her professional career, Pivec is still using that same “heart”, just this time to give back to the local Corvallis community. Pivec has recently helped to create a project called Selfless Servings, which works to “feed healthcare teams and help small businesses who are struggling to retain some revenue”. A really impressive show of good will from one of our favorite players ever.
- Chad Johnson has never been one to keep his name out of the headlines and in only the way the quirky Oregon State alumnus can, he’s offered up his services to the Miami Dolphins amid their recent depth chart issues at the wide receiver position. At 42, Johnson has been seen often working with upcoming gridiron talents in Florida and even considered a shot at the XFL as a kicker, before eventually skipping his tryouts. While it’s doubtful the Dolphins will ask for his help, Johnson apparently does know how to make himself feel younger out there on the field. Happy belated Ochocinco Day everyone!
- Just over a week ago, long-time Oregon State baseball assistant coach Pat Bailey and the baseball program parted ways and the Beavers have now added some new help to the dugout as they welcome back alumni Darwin Barney to Corvallis. Barney will serve in a role as the “program’s camp coordinator and volunteer assistant coach” starting this season. The Portland native played at Oregon State from 2005-2007, winning back-to-back College World Series titles with the Beavers in 2006 and 2007.
- In case you didn’t realize on your Netflix account, season five of the always turbulent junior college football documentary “Last Chance U” has grazed your new selections and for those taking in the season that follows Oakland’s Laney College, you may notice a soon-to-be familiar face. Defensive back Rejzohn Wright, newcomer to the program and the younger brother of Beavers defensive back Nahshon Wright, plays a prominent role in the series, from his stellar on-field play to endless communication skills. The younger Rejzohn is projected to have a strong year for Oregon State, which earned him a Top 20 spot in our Oregon State football important players countdown.
- And finally, it was not the best of weeks for Oregon State alumni Ricky Ortiz, who was waived by the New Orleans Saints in the midst of a position battle at fullback. Ortiz, who we listed as a “bubble guy” to earn a roster spot for the upcoming 2020 campaign, has been under contract with the Baltimore Ravens, Atlanta Falcons and Saints since joining the NFL back in 2017.
