Oregon State Baseball: Beavs Drop Game 2 to Bulldogs

The Beavs fall behind quickly and were never able to recover...

The Beavers took another hard loss today as the Mississippi State Bulldogs clinched the series with a 7-4 win. Jake Pfennigs started for the Beavers today but only lasted one and a third innings before being relieved after allowing four runs in that span. The Bulldogs came out hot and quickly tallied four runs in that short span before adding two more in the fourth inning and then one more in the sixth.

The Beavers tallied more hits than the Bulldogs at eight hits to their seven. The problem was that Oregon State lacked timely hitting throughout this game. After the first few runs went up for Mississippi State, you could get a feel that the game slipping away from Oregon State quickly. In a game that saw the Beavs fight tooth and nail to hold onto a slim lead before losing it, the Bulldogs wasted no time in getting on the board and put this game out of reach for a struggling Beaver offense. The Beavs attempted to salvage the game late with a two-run home run by Alex McGarry, but it was too little too late for Oregon State.

This series has been tough to watch for the Beavs, but we had to tamper expectations heading into this series. The Bulldogs are Omaha contenders for a reason, and facing them is an uphill battle. The Beavs will need to refocus and buckle down if they want to avoid being swept to start the season. Even salvaging a single game in this series would do well for Oregon State.

The Beavers and the Bulldogs will square off in the series finale tomorrow at 11:00 AM PST.
