Despite a spirited attempt at a comeback in the final minutes, the Utah Utes couldn’t hope to overcome one of the biggest offensive explosions Oregon State has had all season, as the Beavers took home a 77-65 road win. The win completes a season sweep for the Beavers over both mountain schools, and the team moves to 17-4 overall and 5-4 in the Pac-12, while Utah sits at 10-10 and 3-6.
Utah actually looked like they’d give the Beavers a big challenge out of the gate. Utah could not miss a three in the first, with Kiana Moore hitting three, and the whole team hitting 5. That gave the Utes a 24-16 lead after the first quarter. The most impressive shot from the Beavers in the first was one that didn’t count; right as time expired, Mikayla Pivec launched a nearly full court heave that found its mark. It didn’t end up counting, but it’s a thing of beauty.
Both defenses clamped down in the second, but Utah couldn’t find an answer for Taylor Jones, who slowly but surely chipped away at the Utah lead. She scored 8 of the Beavers first 9 points in the quarter, but it was an Aleah Goodman three that tied the game up, 28-28. The two teams traded layups and jumpers, and the score remained tied headed into halftime, 32-32.
The Beavers have used big third quarters to take control of games several times this season, but today’s was maybe the best they’ve had all year. Kat Tudor hit 2 threes, and added three more in free throws, while Aleah Goodman and Mikayla Pivec hit threes of their own. Kennedy Brown got into the game offensively and defensively, with some clutch blocks and great layups. The Beavers outscored the Utes 30-11 in the third, practically ending the game 10 minutes early.
Utah managed to eat away at the deficit in the fourth, and the Beavers not scoring for the final five minutes of the game didn’t help, but it was too much to overcome, as Oregon State grabbed the win, 77-65.
Mikayla Pivec led Oregon State in scoring, with 20 points, 12 rebounds and 5 assists. Kat Tudor had another big game, with 16 points, 2 rebounds and 2 assists. Aleah Goodman rounded out the Beavers top scorers with 11 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists.
The Beavers will be back at Gill next weekend for a rematch with the Arizona schools. They’ll look to split the season with Arizona State on Friday, February 7th at 8:00 PM PT, and look to sweep Arizona on Sunday, February 9th at 12:00 PM PT.
