If Oregon State played the whole game with the effort they showed in the final minutes, maybe it would’ve been a different story-line on Thursday night for the Beavers.
Yet instead, a simply pedestrian performance from the program left Oregon State on the wrong side after forty minutes against Arizona State, dropping their first home game of the campaign to the Sun Devils, 82-76.
With the loss, Oregon State now sits at 11-4 overall, with a 1-2 mark in Pac-12 play.
In the outing, forward Tres Tinkle and guard Ethan Thompson tied for a team-high 22 points each, while also shooting a combined 15-21 from the field. The rest of the Oregon State roster shot an abysmal 8-29 overall, with center Kylor Kelley being the only other player to reach double-figures, ending the game with 10 points, 6 rebounds and his usual 4 blocked shots.
For Arizona State, point guard Remy Martin led all scorers with a game-high 24 points. Rob Edwards chipped in 18 points off the bench and Romello White flirted with a double-double, totaling 12 points and 9 rebounds.
Overall, this was a gut-wrenching defeat for the Beavers. Oregon State knows their margin for losses is slim if they have legitimate post-season hopes and that the Pac-12 is one against shaping up to be a dog-eat-dog conference. Right now, the Beavers simply need to regroup in time for Sunday’s tough test at Arizona.
