Grant Gambrell Drafted By Kansas City

Royals take righthander in third round

MLB: Boston Red Sox at Kansas City Royals Denny Medley-USA TODAY Sports

Oregon State pitcher Grant Gambrell has been selected by the Kansas City Royals with the 80th overall pick in the 3rd round of the 2019 MLB Draft

Gambrell’s been a starter for two of his three years at Oregon State, and this season his game really developed. Even though he pitched 13 more total innings from 2018 to 2019, he only allowed 6 more hits (53 to 59), and actually allowed fewer earned runs (28 to 22). That corresponded with a big drop in his ERA, which went from 4.4 in 2018 to 2.83 this year.

Gambrell grabbed 11 wins at Oregon State, 10 as starter and one as a reliever his first year with the team. With injuries sidelining some of the Beavers’ starting rotation this year, Gambrell stepped up to anchor the Beavers’ starting rotation, with his 80 strikeouts a team high.
