In one of the last big battles of the Pac-12 regular season, Stanford emerged victorious in the first game of this weekend’s series, taking an 8-5 victory. The Beavers fall to 19-6 in the conference, and will need to take the series to get back on top of the Pac-12.
After nothing in the first, Oregon State grabbed their first run of the game with a Alex McGarry solo homer in the second. The Cardinal answered in a big way in the bottom of the inning, with Bryce Fehmel giving up two singles, and then hitting batter Tim Tawa with a pitch to load the bases with no outs. A pop fly from Nick Bellafronto tied things up for Stanford, and then a single from Christian Robinson scored two more to give the Cardinal a 3-1 lead.
It didn’t last long, as the Beavers struck back in the third. Beau Philip walked to open the inning, and then a Joe Casey triple brought him home. Adley Rutschman followed up with a grounder that scored Casey, and tied the game 3-3.
Stanford got a pair of runners on second and third in the bottom of the inning, and Tim Tawa sent a ball deep to left field. It looked like the Cardinal would take a three run lead, but Preston Jones made an incredible catch to end the inning.
After a scoreless fourth, the fifth was action packed. Beau Philip and Joe Casey reached the bases with a pair of singles, and then Adley Rutschman single scored Philip and gave the Beavers the lead back. A few batters later, Alex McGarry singled to bring home Casey, the Beavers led 5-3 going into the bottom of the frame.
Unfortunately, Stanford answered back. Brandon Wulff hit a solo homer to start the inning, and Bryce Fehmel then walked the next batter. Stanford’s Andrew Daschbach hit a triple to tie things up, and a sac fly from Duke Kinamon gave the Cardinal the lead. After allowing another double, Fehmel’s day was done, and the Beavers’ brought Joey Mundt to the mound.
Mundt limited the damage, but the Cardinal got one more run to take the 7-5 lead. The OSU bats then fell silent, while Stanford added one more run in the bottom of the 8th, for an 8-5 final score.
Game 2 gets started tomorrow at 12:00 PM PT. Check back with Building the Dam for more OSU Baseball coverage.
