Oregon State Baseball Beats Portland With Late Offensive Surge

It was a rare successful Tuesday for the Beavers who squeaked out a victory at home.

Tuesdays have had the Beavers’ number in 2019...May 14th was different, however. Oregon State beat the University of Portland by a final score of 4-3. Both teams had four hits on the day, including two big ones in the seventh for OSU.

OSU managed to get on the board first with an RBI single from Tyler Malone in the bottom of the first inning. In the top of the third, Portland would take the lead on a three run homer from left fielder Cody Hawken.

Beaver fans were getting nervous until the bottom of the seventh. The Beavs loaded the bases and George Mendazona cleared them with a three RBI double to take a 4-3 lead.

Jake Mulholland and the defense would hold to secure the team’s 34th win of the year.

It was another rough start for Jake Pfennigs who allowed all three of Portland’s runs on the day. Nathan Burns pitched six innings in relief with two strikeouts and a walk. That earned him his second win of the year. Mulholland faced the last two batters to earn his seventh save of the season.

Clutch hitting. Clutch pitching. While the growing pains continue with the younger pitchers and the offense doesn’t quite have the gas we’ve seen this team have in the past few years, it’s nice to see the streak of midweek losses come to an end.

OSU now heads south to Sunken Diamond for a Friday, Saturday, Sunday series against Stanford with just six games left in the regular season.
