Oregon State set another attendance record over a 3 game set at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field topped off with today’s 10-2 victory. The sweep improves the Beavs record to 38-4 on the season and 21-3 in the Pac-12.
Jake Thompson was slightly off today, and by that I mean he allowed more than one run for only the second time in 2017. The junior picked up his 10th win of the season with another impressive effort going 6 1⁄3 innings while giving up 2 runs and striking out 6 Golden Bears. Mitchell Verburg and Max Englebrekt combined for a scoreless 2 2⁄3 innings to preserve the sweep.
Oregon State sprinkled 10 hits up and down the lineup, as 8 of 9 starters got a hit. Adley Rutschman continues to heat up at the plate going 1 for 3 and picking up 2 RBI’s while hitting in the cleanup spot for the first time since early in the season. Fellow freshman Tyler Malone also picked up a pair of RBI’s while pinch hitting for Andy Armstrong in the 6th inning and tacked on another hit in the 8th inning. Over the 3 game set Oregon State scored 29 runs on 31 hits, 8 from Nick Madrigal, off of the Cal pitching staff.
The sweep of Cal combined with Stanford’s loss brings the Beavs magic number to clinch the Pac-12 down to 2 heading into next weekend’s civil war series in Eugene. Look for more on that series later this week.
