Gaviglio who pitched at Oregon state from 2009 to 2011 will replace injured starter Hisashi Iwakuma. Gaviglio who pitched for Ashland High School before attending Oregon State, was drafted by the Cardinals in the 5th round of the 2011 draft. The Cardinals traded Gaviglio to the Mariners following the 2014 season. The right hander started five games for the Tacoma Rainers this season going 2-3 with a 3.31 ERA while striking out 16 and issuing 3 walks. Gaviglio, who represented Italy in this springs World Baseball Classic is expected to be used in long relief for the Mariners.
When Gaviglio makes his debut he will be the 33rd former Beaver to pitch in the major leagues. The Mariners will finish their series in Philadelphia today before heading to Toronto and setting up a potential Gaviglio vs Darwin Barney match-up.
