After some rescheduling, the Beavers began the season in Surprise, Arizona with a morning clash with Indiana before an afternoon match up against Duke.
OSU shut out Indiana 1-0 in the first game with Steven Kwan scoring the only run off of a Christian Donahue double in the 6th. Luke Heimlich started on the mound and went for just over 5 innings. Heimlich struck out 11 of the 20 batters he faced, which was a new career high. Jake Thompson and Jake Mulholland made relief appearances and closer Max Engelbrekdt came in to get the save. Thompson was given the winning decision.
In the second game, the Beavers topped Duke 6-3 in the two schools’ first meeting in 65 years. OSU brought the offensive power early with a five run 2nd inning that included three run homer from preseason All-American Nick Madrigal. The Blue Devils were never really able to catch up after that. Bryce Fehmel had a solid outing as the starter going six innings and giving up 2 earned runs before being relieved. Fehmel earned the winning decision. Jordan Britton, Tommy Paul, and Brandon Eisert all made relief appearances before Mitchell Verburg earned the save in the 9th.
The Beavers next take the field on Sunday, Feb. 19, for a rematch with Duke at 8:30 AM PT. The following day, they will face Indiana for a second time at 10 AM PT.
