Last Sunday Cam Newton took a shot to the head and suffered a concussion. Derek Anderson (former Oregon State QB) took over and was actually quite effect, but couldn’t quite pull off the miraculous comeback. Reigning MVP, Cam Newton, couldn't clear the NFL’s concussion protocol so Derek Anderson will take center stage on Monday Night Football and will earn his first start since 2014. The Panthers have struggled out of the gate after making it to the Super Bowl last season, but are relishing the challenge to play Tampa Bay without Cam Newton.
On the other side of the field former Beaver stud and current Tampa Bay Running Back should take on an even bigger role. With starting RB Doug Martin out and Charles Sims doubtful for Monday night, Quizz will likely be called upon as the Bucs lead back.
Rodgers and Peyton Barber (Rookie out of Auburn) saw increased reps during practice all week. But, Rodgers should receive a majority of the workload with Martin and Sims out.
Rodgers appears ready for the opportunity saying "I always try to take advantage of the opportunity that I’ve been given. You have to practice like you’re No. 1 so when your number is called you’ll be ready to go."
Like Anderson, Jacquizz Rodgers hasn't started a game since 2014, back when he was with Atlanta. His days with the Falcons have helped him in Tampa Bay though, because current head coach Dirk Koetter, was the Falcons Offensive Coordinator from 2012-2014. Which has made learning the playbook easy for Jacquizz and caused him to earn the coaching staffs trust quickly.
Jacquizz signed with the Buccaneers just last month but has assimilated himself with the team very well. He recently was quoted saying "With these past three weeks, I’m right where I need to be. If you come out here and compete and practice like that No. 1 guy, when you’re opportunity comes you’ll just be ready.”
Tampa Bay and Carolina have both been devastated by injuries and it shows with their records both sitting at (1-3) on the season. These teams will be desperate to grab the victory and gain some momentum for the rest of the season. Whoever wins tonight, Oregon State fans can expect Derek Anderson and Jacquizz Rodgers to heavily impact the outcome though.
