Oregon St. alum Matt Boyd broke into the bigs briefly earlier this season with Toronto, but took losses in both of his starts before being sent back to AAA ball. Boyd was shipped to Detroit in a trade last week, and after being called up yesterday, turned in by far his best outing in the majors tonight.

Boyd worked 7 strong innings in his first start for the Tigers, scattering 7 hits but allowing only 1 run, and picked up his first major league win in Detroit's 7-2 victory over Kansas City.

"He pitches up very well with his fastball," Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said. "He gets a lot of fly balls, a lot of foul balls, even some swings and misses. He mixed in three offspeed pitches, at times all of them good. He did an excellent job, really."

Boyd only struck out 2 Royals, but also didn't walk anyone. He is now 1-2 in his MLB career.
