Having eaked out a 1-0 win last night, their 5th 1 run game win already this season, Oregon St. (15-3, 1-0) looks to win their first Pac-12 series of the season tonight at 19th ranked Arizona St. (10-6, 0-1) at 6 PM AST (6 PM PDT).
It was the 3rd year in a row where the Beavers have not only beat the Sun Devils in their series opener, but have shut them out behind a Friday night pitching masterpiece.
Of the 5 conference openers, Oregon St. was the only road team to break through for a win last night.
Caleb Hamilton's single that scored pinch runner Joe Jansen amounted to the only real scoring threat Oregon St. mounted, but it was enough after the Beaver defense cut down two Sun Devils at the plate, which represented the only threats Arizona St. mounted in the pitching duel.
Tonight should see more offense, just because, but its possible there won't be much more, now that conference play has commenced. (See below for tonight's starters, and a flash back to a not so long ago exchange of pitching these teams engaged in.)
Its also the first time this season Beaver baseball will be on the Pac-12 network, instead of on just an internet stream, though the end of the game bucking the conference basketball championship game, vs. scheduling first pitch for a couple of hours earlier, does not seem like sensible scheduling.
Oregon St. will start with freshman RHP Drew Rasmussen (2-0, 1.88 ERA), and Arizona St. will counter with junior LHP Ryan Kellogg (3-0, 3.90 ERA). Beaver fans will recall Kellogg for the no-hitter he threw at at the time 3rd ranked Oregon St. back on March 23, 2013, a 4-0 masterpiece that handed the Oregon St. only their second loss of the season, and one-upped the 1 hitter the Beavers' Matt Boyd had tossed the night before.
