The last time the Beavers played the Wildcats, an Omaha berth was on the line. 2014 was the year where it felt like the Beavers underachieved and still made the national semifinals. The success of that season was supposed to propel them into the 2014 College World Series and win the whole thing. Which seemed on track after a Pac-12 championship and a #1 national seed. Then UC Irvine came along...
Most of the stars from both teams are gone (Andrew Moore, who won't pitch today, being the most notable exception), so the teams are going to look very differently than they did 20 months ago in Corvallis.
The 3-2 Beavers are fresh off a 5-3 win over one of the preseason Big 12 favorites Oklahoma State. 3-2 Kansas State beat Pac-12 cellar dweller Utah yesterday, 3-2. Despite being two seasons removed from a super regional appearance, not much is expected of Kansas State this year; D1Baseball predicts them to finish last in the nine-team Big 12.
Beaver junior Travis Eckert is coming off a quality start no-decision against Michigan State last Saturday -- Eckert pitched 6 innings, gave up 1 run, allowing 5 hits and 2 walks. He makes his second Beaver start today, after transferring over from Clark College in the offseason.
Kansas State starter Levi Mahoris is described by D1baseball as "seasoned and has been through the rigors of the Big 12. MaVorhis doesn’t have blow-away stuff, but did improve his secondary offerings during fall workouts." His first workout last week was a successful one -- W, 6 IP, 5H, 1B, 3K, 0 ER.
Hang out for chatter during the game (no Fight Club references today, I promise), or come back afterwards for a post-game recap.
